Title: Jean Piaget

1
Jean Piaget
  • Jereme George
  • Erin Hershberger
  • ISTC 301.104

2
Jean Piaget genetic epistemologist
  • Swiss theorist who believed in the
    constructiveness theory
  • Studied how knowledge began and developed in
    individuals
  • All students go through 4 stages of cognitive
    development
  • Each stage only occurs after certain genetically
    controlled neurological changes
  • All students pass through the four stages in the
    same order

3
Sensorimotor Stage
Birth 2 years
  • Child explores using senses
  • Investigate through motor
  • activity.

4
Implications
  • Allow children to play with toys that appeal to
    multiple senses
  • Provide tactile learning materials

5
Preoperational Stage
2 7 years
  • Develop speech
  • Use symbolic activities
  • Numerical abilities
  • Increased self control and can delay
    self-gratification

6
Implications
  • Allow students to work with real objects
  • Give students time to investigate and explore
    his/her ideas
  • Allow students to discuss their ideas with peers

An animated computer game which allows students
to move around the number line to explore
relationships among numbers.
7
Concrete Operational Stage
7-11 years
  • Increased abstract reasoning
  • Can generalize from concrete examples
  • Can perform conservation tasks

8
Implications
  • Give students time to respond, allow wait time.
  • Incorporate all education levels in your
instruction. Make sure that all students are
    challenged without surpassing their abilities.
  • It is important to discuss what students have
learned and make sure that they can explain what
    they have discussed.

9
Formal Operational Stage
12-15 years
  • Can form and test hypothesis
  • Logically organize information
  • Ability to reason scientifically
  • Students have the ability to show abstract
    results using symbolism when necessary.

10
Implications
  • Allow students to develop their own thoughts and
    ideas
  • Require students to explain why how things
happen, not just know that they occur.
  • Example of abstract problem.

11
What activities would support Piagets theory of
cognitive development?
  • E-mails sent to and from other countries
  • Using digital cameras to relay information
  • Stimulating and instructional games
  • Assignments which include problem solving
  • Activities which incorporate educating the
    community
  • Allow students to create their own artwork,
music, or drawings. Then have them discuss with
their peers how they relate to the topic.

12
Constructivist Learning
Inquiry Based Technology
  • Theories
  • Learning abilities differ at each stage
  • Children progress through the stages through
    exploration with the environment
  • Educational Implications
  • Tailor instruction to each students individual
    needs and preferences
  • Technological Implications
  • Electronic manipulatives that support learning
