Myths About Stroke
2
  • The number 4 cause of death in the United
States, stroke refers to the disease affecting
the brain and arteries leading in and out of it.
Understanding stroke and how it varies from the
heart attack means tackling some of the common
    myths surrounding the disease.

3
Myth Stroke affects the heart
  • As mentioned, stroke is a disease that affects
the brain. It occurs when blood flow suddenly
becomes blocked in the arteries around the brain.
When a blood clot from the heart dislodges and
causes a stroke, this is known as atrial
fibrillation, which can be treated with blood
    thinners.

4
Myth Men have more strokes
  • In fact, women are the ones who suffer from
strokes from often, though it's a slight lead at
best. While men are more likely to develop heart
disease during earlier ages, women live longer
and are more likely to be exposed to a stroke.

5
Myth Taking aspiring treats strokes at home
  • This can help those at risk of heart attack, but
the same is not true for strokes. In fact,
aspirin could worsen hemorrhagic strokes. The
only way to treat the stroke is to seek immediate
    transportation to the emergency room.

6
Myth Strokes can't be prevented
  • While total guarantee may be impossible, strokes
can be prevented. The International Stroke Study
noted that 90 percent of strokes were associated
by the preventable diseases high blood pressure,
    obesity and diabetes.

7
Myth Immediate care is not necessary
  • As suggested above, someone suffering a stroke is
suffering a medical emergency. Any symptoms of
stroke, such as double vision, paralysis,
weakness, difficulty speaking, loss of balance or
sudden dizziness, should be met with an immediate
call to 911. Surgical techniques and various
medications can help break up the clot and resume
healthy blood flow, but the best results require
    treatment within four hours.

8
Myth Pain will precede any stroke
  • Up to 70 percent of those suffering from
ischemic stroke do not develop a headache, which
makes the symptom a poor one to rely on. The real
symptoms to watch out for include absence of
    coordination, difficulty comprehending someone
else's words, double vision, sudden weakness or
numbness on one side of the body, as well as
confusion. When this occurs to a loved one, opt
to call 911 rather than drive to the emergency
room patients arriving in an ambulance will be
    treated more promptly.

9
Myth Recovering from a stroke only takes a few
months
  • Although the first few months are important for
the majority of healing, the actual process of
recovery could last upwards of two years. Some
patients may even need to undergo additional
physical therapy in order to regain the most
possible function for independent living after a
    stroke.
