Janice Kapp Perry Biography
  • Janice Kapp Perry is a prolific composer and
    lyricist of inspirational music. Janice Kapp
    Perry was born in Ogden and lives in Provo, Utah
    with her husband Douglas for 44 years. They have
    five childrens and over a dozen grandchildren in
    Utah.
  • Janice and Douglas were interested in many foster
    children. Janice received her musical training
    degree at Brigham Young University in 1960.
    Although she was born into a musical family she
    did not begin composing until she was nearly 40
    years old. Sports were more important to her.

  • She competed on many city league softball teams
    and regularly played volleyball and racquetball.
    Janice Musical Success initiated in the late 1970
    through her "two lucky breaks" she calls first
    break when she broke her ankle playing basketball
    and her family TV broke simultaneously the same
    day.
  • Sitting in home nothing to do she was very much
    upset. At that time her bishop asked her to write
    original music for the ward roadshow, her musical
    journey initiated with a great success. She has
    been writing and recording gospel music for the
    last 27 years. She composed the hymn "As sisters
    in Zion" for the LDS hymnbook and has ten songs
    in the primary songbook

  • She also served as a relief society president and
    got Provo ward for 7 years. She got retired in
    2000 from singing with the Mormon tabernacle
    choir. Her music is known worldwide throughout
    the church. She has produced more than 50 albums
    of original music, numerous sacred cantatas, and
    several full-length musicals.
  • Janice Kapp Perry served as a missionary for the
    Church of Jesus Christ of Latter - day Saints in
    Chile with her husband from 2002 to 2004. She
    served as a missionary with her husband in Provo
    and assigned to a Spanish speaking ward. In 2007,
    her music has been performed by artists such as
    Gladys Knight, Brooks Dunn, and The
    Osmonds-Second Generation and she has co-written
    with Senator Orrin Hatch.

  • She received the Ricks College Exemplary Woman
    Award in 1994, and the BYU Alumni Distinguished
    Service Award in 1997.She and Douglas enjoy
    traveling around the nation presenting firesides.
    Perry co-wrote six albums of songs with Orrin
    Hatch.
  • Ten years, she was working as a missionary where
    she would attend many women conferences around
    United States. She recently has written and
    published three volumes of new sacred hymns with
    a variety of hymn text writers, as well as a book
    telling the stories behind her songs. Songs such
    as Love Is Spoken Here, Im Trying to Be like
    Jesus, and I Love to See the Temple are among
    the most popular Primary songs.

  • In 2013, LDS Living posted a 100 Greatest LDS
    Songs list and A Childs Prayer (Perrys
    favorite) topped the list with seven others in
    the top thirty. Perry has been officially
    commissioned to write music by The Church of
    Jesus Christ, including penning I Walk by Faith
    for the Young Women organization.
  • Her process always involves prayer, scripture
    study, pondering, and then writing. She has over
    1300 songs and 50 albums to her credit. Some of
    her songs have been written in response to
    personal tragedy. After her fifth and last child
    died shortly after birth, she wrote Where Is
    Heaven? After her left hand inexplicably became
    nonfunctional, she wrote The Test". Perry music
    is frequently selected and arranged for the
    Mormon Tabernacle Choir.

  • Perry and her cousin Joy Saunders Lundberg wrote
    a full-length musical and performed it 239 times
    over the span of three years. She has also
    collaborated with Utah Senator Orrin Hatch to
    write Heal Our Land, which was performed at the
    National Prayer Breakfast in 2001 and at
    President George W. Bushs second inauguration.
  • She also had a remarkable experience when her
    niece, who was dying of cancer, asked her to set
    a poem written by President Gordon B. Hinckley to
    music. She received his permission to write music
    to What Is This Thing That Men Call Death? but
    did not receive a reply to her request to publish
    it.

  • When he passed away she thought the song would
    never be published. He had signed the consent,
    however, two days before he died. She received
    his letter the day after his death, and the next
    day, the Mormon Tabernacle Choir asked for her
    permission to sing the song at his memorial
    service.
