14Concepts of Leadership
15I used to think that running an organization was
equivalent to conducting a symphony orchestra.
But I don't think that's quite it it's more
like jazz. There is more improvisation. Warren
Bennis
16Good leaders are made not born. If you have the
desire and willpower, you can become an effective
leader.
17Good leaders develop through a never ending
process of self-study, education, training, and
experience (Jago,1982).
18To inspire your workers into higher levels of
teamwork, there are certain things you must be,
know, and, do.
19These do not come naturally, but are acquired
through continual work and study
Good leaders are continually working and studying
to improve their leadership skills they are NOT
resting on their laurels.

21Life cycle of a team
Members compete for status, and argue about
appropriate directions for the group. External
pressures interfere with the group, and tensions
rise between individuals as they assert
themselves.

24Habit4 Think Win / Win.
Have frame of mind that always seeks to have all
parties feel as though they have won the benefits
to be mutually shared.
25Habit4 Think Win / Win.
All parties feel good about decisions made and
are committed to plan of action.
26Habit4 Think Win / Win.
Cooperation is the key.
27Life cycle of a team
The group begins moving together in a cooperative
fashion, and a tentative balance among competing
forces is struck. Group norms emerge to guide
individual behavior, and cooperative feelings are
increasingly evident.
28Habit 5. Seek First to Understand, Then Be
Understood.
- Practice empathetic listening skills so that you
understand other people from their frame of
reference.
29Habit 5. Seek First to Understand, Then Be
Understood.
- Listen with not only ears, but with eyes and
hearts. - Then present your ideas logically, clearly,
specifically, and in the context of understanding
the other person.
30EMPHATIC LISTENING
When another persons speaks were usually
listening at one of four levels.
1) We may be ignoring another person, not really
listening at all.
2) We may practice pretending. Yeah, Uh-huh.
Right
31EMPHATIC LISTENING
3) We may practice selective listening, hearing
only certain parts of the conversation. We often
do this when were listening to the constant
chatter of a preschool child.
32EMPHATIC LISTENING
4) Or we may even practice alternative listening,
paying attention and focusing energy on the words
that are being said.
5) But very few of us ever practice the fifth
level, the highest form of listening, emphatic
listening.
33THE GIFT
34Life cycle of a team
The group matures and learns to handle complex
challenges. Functional roles are performed and
fluidly exchanged as needed, and tasks are
efficiently accomplished.

36Habit 6. Synergize.
- Create new alternatives.
- Leave your comfort zones to confront new and
unknown challenges. - Value differences, respect them, and use them to
build on strengths. - Discard old scripts, and write new ones.
37Habit 6. Synergize.
- Discard old scripts, and write new ones.
- You are limited only by your imagination.
- Develop unity and creativity with the others.
- Unleash new powers, create new, exciting
alternatives.
38Habit 7. Sharpen the Saw.
- Take time to preserve the most important
asset-------yourself. - Take the time to minister to your own physical,
mental, social, emotional, and spiritual needs.
39Habit 7. Sharpen the Saw.
- Leading people requires a tremendous amount of
energy.
40Life cycle of a team
Even the most successful groups, committees, and
project teams disband sooner or later. Their
breakup is called adjournment, which requires
dissolving intense social relations and returning
to permanent assignments. The adjournment stage
is becoming even more frequent with the advent of
flexible organizations, which feature temporary
groups.
41Habit2 Begin with the End in Mind
Start with an image or paradigm of the end mind.
- Have clear understanding of where you are going,
where you are, and what is going to take to get
to the destination.
42Personal adjournment
43Clear your mind of everything except to what YOU
will hear as I will invite you to do. Dont worry
about your schedule today, your family, your boy
friends, your girl friends, your good and bad
experiences in life. Just focus with me and
really open your mind. In your minds eye, see
yourself going to a funeral of a loved one.
Picture your self driving to a funeral parlor or
chapel, parking the car, and getting out. As
you walk inside the building, you notice the
flowers, the soft organ music, you see the faces
of friends and family you pass along the way.
44You feel the shared sorrow of losing, the joy of
having known, that radiates from the hearts of
the people there. As you walk down the front of
the room and look inside the casket, you suddenly
come face to face with yourself. This is your
funeral, 50 years from today. All these people
have come to honor you, to express feelings of
love and appreciation for your life. As you take
a seat and wait for the services to begin, you
look at the program in your hand. There are to
be four speakers. The first speaker is one of
your parents, The second speaker is one of your
friends, someone who can give a sense of what you
were as a person when you were still living. The
third speaker is one of your teachers. And the
fourth is from your church.

50A LESSON FROM GEESE
DOCMAR
51Have you ever wondered why migrating geese fly in
a V formation?
As with most animal behavior, God had a good
reason for including that in their instincts.
52As each bird flaps its wings, it creates uplift
for the bird following.
