Title: Alison McKean
1Alison McKean
- Head of Environment
- ScottishPower Energy Retail
2Iberdrola
- Worlds 4th largest utility by market
capitalisation - Operate in 30 countries
- Global leader in renewable energy 7,000MW and a
project pipeline of 40,000MW - Supply more than 5m UK customers with electricity
and gas - Moving to low carbon economy through wind power,
wave and tidal energy and carbon capture and
storage projects
3Committed to Sustainability
- Since 1990 we have reduced CO2 emissions per
unit of electricity supplied by 26 - Demand side measures are equally important in
reducing CO2 emissions
4Energy Efficiency in Europe
If EU countries reduced energy consumption by 20
some 800 million tonnes of CO2 could be saved
annually
5Carbon Impact of Home Energy
- 27 of UK CO2 emissions arise from home energy
use - The average household is responsible for emitting
six tonnes of CO2 each year - This could easily be cut by at least one third
through energy efficiency measures
6Help and Advice
- Sent out 100,000 energy efficiency leaflets
- Handled 14,000 energy efficiency advice calls
- Included energy efficiency messages in all
customer bills - Issued 40,000 free home energy efficiency audits
- Supported the Home Heat Helpline
7Mainstream Ad Campaign
In a move unprecedented in the industry,
ScottishPower incorporated energy efficiency
messages into our mainstream customer advertising
campaign, spreading the message that energy
efficiency can save money AND benefit the
environment

13ScottishPowers Track Record
- Exceeded EEC1 energy saving target by 70
- Achieved EEC2 target for 2005-2008 within two
years - Savings achieved through strategic alliances with
housing providers and Warm Zones - 9,000 GWh saved equivalent to the energy used
by two thirds of London households
14Work Conducted for EEC2
- Insulated 104,000 cavity walls and 55,000 lofts
- Supplied more than 40,000 condensing boilers
- Gave away 3.6 million low energy lightbulbs
15CERT
- CERT will replace EEC from April 2008
- Suppliers obliged to deliver CO2 savings of 154M
tonnes between 2008-2011 - Projected cost of 2.75Bn
- Behavioural change is a new element and a major
part of the programme
16Behavioural Change
- CERT alone cannot deliver energy efficiency
targets - Need for a cohesive National Strategy
- Effective Energy Efficiency policies
- Better organisation of responsibilities and
services - Central umbrella organisation backed by a local
delivery network
17EDR Aims Objectives
- Research customers home energy use habits
- Deliver innovative intervention(s)
- Help customers better understand their energy
demands - Research the impact the interventions have on
household energy use and habits - Project launched in 2007 and runs until February
2010
18What Next?
Research will involve representative sample of
2,600 customers. Interventions will include
- Better information, including historical
comparisons of energy use - Rollout of Smart Meters
- Real time visual displays
- Innovative tariff offerings shaped to bring more
attention to domestic energy usage
19Post 2011
- 2011 is just three years away
- Suppliers negotiating with Ofgem and DEFRA on
solutions - 25 of programme potentially dedicated to
behavioural change - Need more effective policies, eg fiscal,
domestic appliances - Teamwork between energy advice providers
20Fuel Poverty
- We favour a separate programme to tackle Fuel
Poverty - We need to encourage ALL customers, not just
people on low incomes to use energy more
efficiently
21Energy Efficiency
- Energy efficiency is the low hanging fruit in
tackling climate change - It is overshadowed by the glamour of renewable
energy - Must be given a higher profile through hearts
and minds campaigns to inspire and motivate
22Roadmap for Success
- National Strategy for energy efficiency
- Policy changes to kick start markets for energy
services - Give people the right information to make
informed choices - Teamwork among energy advice providers to
stimulate and achieve long-term behavioural
change -
