Psalm 981-5 Sing to the LORD a new song,
for he has done marvelous things. With his
right hand and his holy arm has he won for
himself the victory. The LORD has made known
his victory his righteousness has he openly
shown in the sight of the nations.
71
He remembers his mercy and faithfulness to
the house of Israel, and all the ends of the
earth have seen the victory of our God.
Shout with joy to the LORD, all you lands
lift up your voice, rejoice, and sing. Sing to
the Lord with the harp, with the harp and the
voice of song.
72
A Reading from the Letter of Paul to the
Romans Therefore, since we are justified by
faith, we have peace with God through our Lord
Jesus Christ. Through him we have obtained
access to this grace in which we stand, and we
rejoice in our hope of sharing the glory of God.
73
More than that, we rejoice in our sufferings,
knowing that suffering produces endurance, and
endurance produces character, and character
produces hope, and hope does not disappoint us,
because God's love has been poured into our
hearts through the Holy Spirit which has been
given to us. Reader The Word of the
Lord. People Thanks be to God.

Luke 2413-35
The Story of the Walk to Emmaus
91
Now on that same day, the first day of the week,
two of the disciples were going to a village
called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem,
and talking with each other about all these
things that had happened.
92
While they were talking and discussing, Jesus
himself came near and went with them, but their
eyes were kept from recognizing him.
93
And he said to them, "What are you discussing
with each other while you walk along?" They stood
still, looking sad.
94
Then one of them, whose name was Cleopas,
answered him, "Are you the only stranger in
Jerusalem who does not know the things that have
taken place there in these days?"
95
He asked them, "What things?" They replied, "The
things about Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet
mighty in deed and word before God and all the
people,
96
and how our chief priests and leaders handed him
over to be condemned to death and crucified him.
But we had hoped that he was the one to redeem
Israel.
97
Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third
day since these things took place. Moreover, some
women of our
group astounded
us. They were at the tomb early this morning,
and when they did not find his body there,
98
they came back and told us that they had indeed
seen a vision of angels who said that he was
alive.
99
Some of those who were with us went to the tomb
and found it just as the women had said but they
did not see him."
100
Then he said to them, "Oh, how foolish you are,
and how slow of heart to believe all that the
prophets have declared!
101
Was it not necessary that the Messiah should
suffer these things and then enter into his
glory?"
102
Then beginning with Moses and all the prophets,
he interpreted to them the things about himself
in all the scriptures.
103
As they came near the village to which they were
going, he walked ahead as if he were going on.
104
But they urged him strongly, saying, "Stay with
us, because it is almost evening and the day is
now nearly over."
105
So he went in to stay with them. When he was at
the table with them,
106
he took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave
it to them.
107
Then their eyes were opened, and they recognized
him
108
and he vanished from their sight.
109
They said to each other, "Were not our hearts
burning within us while he was talking to us on
the road, while he was opening the scriptures to
us?"
110
hat same hour they got up and
returned to Jerusalem and they found the eleven
and their companions gathered together. They were
saying, "The Lord has risen indeed, and he has
appeared to Simon!"
111
Then they told what had happened on the road, and
how he had been made known to them in the
breaking of the bread.
112

Leader God of all, Creator of the Universe,
you are worthy of glory and praise. All
Glory to you for ever and ever.
203
At your command all things came to be the vast
expanse of interstellar space, galaxies, suns,
the planets in their courses, and this fragile
earth, our island home. All By your will they
were created and have their being.
204
From the primal elements you brought forth the
human race, and blessed us with memory, reason,
and skill. You made us the stewards of creation.
But we turned against you, and betrayed your
trust and we turned against one another. All
Have mercy, Lord, for we are sinners in your
sight.
205
Again and again, you called us to return. Through
prophets and sages you revealed your righteous
Law. And in the fullness of time you sent your
only Son, born of a woman, to fulfill your Law,
to open for us the way of freedom and peace. By
his blood, he reconciled us. By his wounds, we
are healed.
206

208
And therefore we praise you, joining with the
heavenly chorus, with angels and archangels,
prophets, apostles, and martyrs, and with all
those in every generation who have looked to you
in hope, to proclaim with them your glory, in
their unending hymn
209
All Holy, Holy, Holy Lord, God of power and
might, heaven and earth are full of
your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is
the One who comes in the name of the
Lord. Hosanna in the highest.
210
And so, Father, we who have been redeemed by him,
and made a new people by water and by blood, now
celebrate his gift to us, for on the night he was
betrayed he took bread, said the blessing, broke
the bread, and gave it to his friends, and said,
211
Take, eat This is my Body, which is given for
you. Do this for the remembrance of me.
212
After supper, he took the cup of wine, gave
thanks, and said, Drink this, all of you This
is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed
for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins.
Whenever you drink it, do this for the
remembrance of me.
213
Remembering now his work of redemption, and
offering to you this bread and cup, our sacrifice
of praise and thanksgiving, We celebrate his
death and resurrection, as we await the day
of his coming.
214

world about us. Deliver us from the presumption
of coming to this Table for solace only, and not

compassion for pardon only, and not for renewal.

Let the grace of this Holy Communion make us one
body, one spirit in Christ, that we may worthily
serve the world in his name. Risen Lord, be known
to us in the breaking of the Bread.
218
Accept these prayers and praises, Father, through
Jesus Christ our great High Priest, to whom, with
you and the Holy Spirit, be honor, glory,
worship, and praise, now and for ever. AMEN.
219
And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we
are bold to say,
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy
Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be
done, on earth as it is in heaven.
220
Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us
our trespasses, as we forgive those who
trespass against us.
221
And lead us not into tempation, but deliver us
from evil,
for thine is the kingdom, and the power,
and the glory, forever and ever.
Amen.
222
And lead us not into tempation, but deliver us
from evil,
for thine is the kingdom, and the power,
and the glory, forever and ever.
Amen.
223

Let us pray Ever loving God, through the mystery
of your presence, you have filled us with
hope and joy. Thank you for giving us a taste
of heaven, a sip from the river of your
glorious delights. And now, O Lord, make us
instruments of your peace As we make our way in
the world, help us sow your pardon, love, and
renewal.
303
Empower us by your Holy Spirit to love mercy,
to do justice, and to walk
humbly with our God,
304
following the examples of all your saints who
magnify the impact of your love, through
Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
