The Law
  • Proposition 300, passed by Arizona voters in
November 2006, stipulates that college students
who are not legal United States citizens or are
without lawful immigration status must pay
out-of-state tuition, and that persons who are
not United States citizens and who are without
lawful immigration status are not eligible for
    financial assistance using state money.

3
Bi-annual Reports
  • The number of students attending who are not U.S.
    Citizens or legal residents.
  • 2. The number of students attending who apply for
    but are denied financial assistance.

4
Out-of-state Tuition
  • The law requires that those who are not citizens
or legal residents pay out-of-state tuition,
which now is 90 per credit hour for students
taking fewer than seven credit hours and 280 per
credit hour for students taking seven or more
    credit hours.
  • The in-state tuition rate is 65 per credit
    hour.

5
Tuition Comparison
  • In-state tuition is 65/credit hour
  • If taking 6 credits 390
  • If taking 12 credits 780
  • Out-of-state tuition is 90/credit hour if fewer
    than 7 credits
  • If taking 6 credits 540
  • Out-of-state tuition is 280/credit hour if
    taking 7 or more credits

11
Federal Aid
  • If the student is a US Citizen but one or more
parents are undocumented, the student is eligible
    for federal student aid.
  • However, if the parents supply a fake or stolen
social security number (SSN) on the form, the
student's FAFSA will be rejected when the
parent's social security number fails to match.
The FAFSA may also be rejected when the parents
submit a SSN or Taxpayer Identification Number
(TIN) that is valid for work purposes only.

12
Your Questions

    scholarships?

    or federal agencies.
  • Are other states different?
  • Probably.

13
Your Questions
  • Will anything change with a new president?
  • Federal legislation would supersede state laws
  • Is it legal for the universities to ask for an
    SSN?
