Title: Paul Cezanne

1
Paul Cezanne The Still Life
  • Grade 4

2
  • Paul Cezanne was born in the south of France.
  • To show his love for nature, he painted things in
a way that had never been seen before.
  • Paul shocked people with his new ideas and
changed the history of art forever!

3
  • One reason people were shocked with his art was
that they thought his paintings looked too flat.
They were used to paintings that showed lots of
perspectivethe feeling of distance and space
like in the painting to the right.

4
  • Paul thought that since the surface of a painting
was flat, it made sense to paint objects so that
they fit better on a flat surface. He didnt
think perspective was always necessary to show
    the beauty of nature.

Which style do you prefer?

6
Early Cubism?
  • Sometimes Paul would show several different views
in one painting! In Still Life with Fruit
Basket, you can see the side of the fruit basket
at the same time youre looking at the top of the
    ginger jar next to it.

7
Color
  • Paul also used lots of color, building up shapes
and objects to make them feel solid. In some of
his paintings, even the people seem like theyre
chiseled out of stone or carved out of clay.
Using colors this way was another new idea of
    Pauls.

8
The Impressionists
  • As a young man, Paul studied art in Paris. This
is where he met Claude Monet. He and Claude
became good friends. Claude was also looking for
    new ways to picture things.
  • They told Paul how much more fun it was to paint
outdoors than to work in a dark, stuffy studio.

9
  • The Impressionists invited Paul to join them in
an exhibit they were having. Paul agreed, even
though he really didnt paint their way.
  • The Impressionists were interested in capturing a
moment of time during the day in their paintings.
They used feathery brush strokes and lots of
    color.

10
The Still Life
  • Paul Cezanne always worked very slowly and
carefully. He made his art dealer sit 115 times
for the portrait above! Paul insisted that he
sit perfectly still, and had a fit if he moved
    even an inch!

11
  • Paul is probably best known for his still-life
    paintings.

12
A still life is an arrangement of fruit, flowers,
food or assorted objects.

Attention to Detail
  • Paul Cezanne gave as much attention to the
backgrounds and space around objects in his
paintings as he did to the main subject.
