• Romanticism was all about spontaneity, emotion,
  effect.
• Impressionism confirms the Romantic quest for
  freedom, but involves an emotional attachment to
  the things painted. Tried to capture the artists
  personal feelings toward the scene.
• Post Impressionism continues this freedom of
  expression by liberating emotion, through
  unexpected use of gesture and color. Used
  simplified structures.
