ProPrint the Project

• Joint project of the Computing Centre at the
  Humboldt-University at Berlin and the university
  library at the Georg-August-University at
  Göttingen.
• Project Term started in November 2000 finished
  at the end of October 2002
• founded by DFN-Verein (German Research Network
  Association) The DFN-Verein is a non-profit
  making body grouping together scientific and
  research interests in Germany for the promotion
  of computer-based communication and information
  services.

Merge the servers

• Creation of an interface for different servers at
  first in Göttingen and Berlin
• Definition of a metadataset
• Use the OAI-Protocol
• The results are
• A service for users to compose a new document
  from parts of documents they find in ProPrint.
• Print-on-demand-service for new documents, which
  will be offered by professional printing shops.

Merge the servers

• Installation of the ProPrint Server, which is a
  connection between the documentservers.
• Database (MySQL, Allegro)
• Only the bibliographical and administrative
  metadata are stored centraly on the Proprint
  Server but the documents remain on its original
  servers.

• Communication between ProPrint and the attached
  documentservers is realised by an extension of
  the OAI-Protocol.
• The documentservers are queried regularly via the
  OAI-Protocol for metadata records. These data can
  then be search by the users.

ProPrint - Metadataset

• The ProPrint metadata are based on Dublin Core
  standard. It enables the direct search within the
  offered online documents.
• Pro print orients itself at other projects, e.g.
  DissOnline (MetaDiss) or Math Net Preprints.
• ProPrint developed a new "Application profile",
  which is based on Dublin Core, metadata of other
  projects and metadata for the print-on-demand-serv
  ice.

ProPrint Document-Service

• The authors can publish their documents via the
  documentserver their own university.
• ProPrint uses the document templates and training
  courses of the Humboldt-University at Berlin,
  which are offered for MS Word and LaTeX.
• ProPrint offers assistance for the conversion of
  conventional document Workflows to exemplary
  solutions.

ProPrint Which kind of documents will be
offered?

• Primarily 5 different types of documents will be
  offered by the ProPrint-service
• Theses
• Preprints
• Proceedings
• Scripts for lectures
• Journals
• In addition digitalised documents from Göttingen,
  which are scanned in the Göttinger Digitizing
  Center (GDZ), can be used via the
  ProPrint-service

Print on demand service

• Print-on-demand is the offer to print a primarily
  online document on paper
• ProPrint offers only edition 1.
• This is a private copy for the scientific use and
  secured by the Urheberrechtsgesetz (53 UrhG,
  german law).
• The data will be sent from ProPrint to the
  printing service and are printed very quickly by
  a printing machine.

Print on demand service

• Several attached printing-on-demand-services will
  put inquired documents to the user for money at
  the disposal.
• That means, an attached pod-service is searched
  which is situated near the ordering user and
  match the required quality standard.
• At first, ProPrint will co-operate with the
  pod-service "Klartext" (Göttingen) and "Lange"
  (Berlin).

ProPrint Price model in the comparison

• In the SUB the copy of a page costs 5 Cent.
• Subito calculates 30 cent per page for students.
  (Subito is the library document delivery service
  for articles and books.)
• The ProPrint print-on-demand-service offers a
  page for 5 cent.
• The binding of the document costs 3.45 euro.
