Lab Safety Review
  • Follow all instructions.
  • NEVER eat, drink, or chew anything in lab.
  • Never spray cologne or perfume in lab.
  • Never run, push, throw objects or engage in
    horseplay.

  • Report All accidents or injuries immediately.
  • Use equipment only as directed and only when
    permission is given.
  • Keep floors clear.
  • Do not leave your experiment unattended.

  • Wash hands with soap and water before leaving
    lab.
  • Know location and operation of safety equipment.
  • Always cut away from you and down on the tray.
  • Razors, scalpels, dissecting needles, and other
    sharp instruments MUST be carried in a tray or
    protective container.

  • Shoes with closed heels and toes must be worn in
    the lab.
  • Tie back long hair.
  • Do not wear bulky or loose fitting clothes and
    remove loose jewelry.
  • Protective goggles, apron, and gloves must be
    worn properly.

  • Be aware of where other are located around you.
  • Do NOT talk with your hands if you have sharp
    instruments in them.

Disposal of Materials
  • All materials that are involved with this lab
    must be placed in the green trash can. Do NOT
    put any trash including used gloves, paper
    towels, or piggy parts in the regular classroom
    trash can.

You must be RESPONSIBLE!
  • Failure to follow these rules will result in the
    following
  • 1st time write all rules out manually.
    Identify the rule you broke and explain why it is
    necessary.

  • 2nd time Research a laboratory accident
    showing violation of a lab rule. Write a summary
    of that accident (250 words) and include the
    result of the accident. Properly cite your
    source. Call home to parental unit.

  • 3rd time - Removal from the lab activity for 2
    days. You are still responsible for all
    material you miss and for all work that is to be
    turned in. You will be written up.

  • 4th and final time Removal from all labs for
    the rest of the school year. You are still
    responsible for all material and work to be
    turned in. Essay of 250 500 words for EACH
    section missed (with 2 sources cited). You will
    be written up again.

Assignment Information
  • DEADLINES not accepted after the date set.
  • PIGGY PACK Contains all assignments in order.
  • VOCABULARY Define the word and leave a blank
    line between each new word. Underline the word.

  • QUESTIONS write out the question. Indent to
    answer the question. Make the question and
    answer very clear to see.
  • DRAWINGS all on plain paper. No lined paper.
    Two ways to label 1) label directly, 2) mark a
    list of words with letters and place letters in
    the proper spot.

  • Note All Drawings Must have a title or they will
    not be considered. No exceptions.

  • ASSIGNMENTS will be turned in by the DEADLINE
    for grading. When you get the graded assignment
    back, put it in your piggy pack. Your piggy pack
    will be incomplete if you are missing any
    assignments even if they have been graded.

  • NOTE If you miss the deadline you will miss that
    grade but you still want to complete the
    assignment and include it in your piggy pack
    because that will be graded for completeness. In
    other words, some assignments will be graded two
    times.

Books
  • Since books have a tendency to walk out of the
    room, we will have to count the books at the end
    of each lab. No one leaves until all books are
    accounted for.
  • Some books will be available to check out for
    home use.

The Contract
  • Each student will write out, sign, and turn in
    the contract for lab safety. Failure to do so
    will result in loss of lab privileges.
  • Use a full sheet of paper and write this in ink.
  • Before you continue, read the responsibilities
    and consequences section.

Piggy Pack
  • Your piggy pack will be an individual project.
    Each person must turn in one piggy pack.
  • The piggy pack will be built over a couple of
    weeks and you will need to keep all the required
    papers together.

    you can tell the difference.

    or organs that you are told about.
  • Do not destroy the reproductive organs, the

  • Remove the structures from the thoracic cavity
    and make sure you include the trachea, larynx and
    on up to the epiglottis if possible (usually very
    difficult most get part of larynx only) to
    examine closer.
  • Make sure you leave the diaphragm in place for
    later use. Cut the blood vessels as close to the
    diaphragm as possible.

  • AFTER you are comfortable with the location of
    the main organs of the abdominal cavity, REMOVE
    the large group of organs that are involved in
    the digestive system. This will include the
    liver, stomach, intestines, spleen, pancreas, and
    mesentery all the way to the rectum. DO NOT
    remove the umbilical cord, bladder, kidneys or
    any reproductive organs.

    including the kidney (x2), ureter and bladder.
  • Make sure you take this time to find and identify
    the various parts of the reproductive system as
    well.
  • Remove one kidney with some of the ureter and
    blood supply intact.

    kidney (taco shells) and DRAW and Label what you
    see. You should be able to identify ureter,
    renal artery, cortex, medulla, and calyx.
  • Examine half of your kidney under the microscope
    and draw the additional details.
