  • Greek is related to the languages of India
    (Sanskrit), Persia, Armenia, Albania, Slovenia,
    Lithuania, Rome, and Germany.
  • These various languages are known as the
    Indo-European family of languages.

  • The Greek language extends back to about 1400 BC.

  • The Indo-European languages are those which were
    spoken by those inhabiting a region between
    east-central Asia, and west-central Europe.

    languages of the great writers and poets.

  • j- Smooth breathing mark
  • Placed over first vowel and not pronounced
  • J- Rough breathing mark
  • Placed over first vowel (and first r) and
    gives a h sound to the word

  • A Diphthong consists of two vowels that produce
    one sound
  • The second vowel is always an i or an u.

    does not affect pronunciation)
