  • On there arrival back to the USA they stumbled
upon the abandoned Hull Mansion which had been
used as a store house for immigrants.

The founding of Hull House.
  • After finding the Hull mansion Jane used her
family resources to purchase the house.

old mansion into a serviceable shelter and
    education center.
  • At Hull House they provided kindergarten, day
care, art galleries, libraries, an employment
bureau as well as class to help immigrants cope
    with America.

8
An excerpt from Twenty Years at Hull House
  • We believed, in our sublime self-conceit, that
the difficulty of life would lie solely in the
direction of losing these precious ideals of
ours, of failing to follow the way of martyrdom
and high purpose we had marked out for ourselves,
and we had no notion of the obscure paths of
    tolerance, just allowance, and self-blame
wherein, if we held our minds open, we might
learn something of the mystery and complexity of
    life's purposes (1910, 63).

9
Activates out side of Hull House.
  • Jane involved herself in social reform efforts
such as housing, sanitation issues, factory
inspections, rights of immigrants, women and
children, pacifism, and the 8-hour day.
  • Jane was elected Vice President of the National
Women Suffrage Association. For 3 years.
  • Jane also campaigned for the progressive party
supporting their candidate for president Theodor
    Roosevelt

10
Awards and acclaim
  • Jane was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize but due to
her health she was unable to accept the prize
herself due to the fact that ceremonies were held
