When last we left..
  • Jane Addams, founder of Hull House and the WILPF,
    has won the Nobel Prize. Her belief that people
    are disadvantaged by structural (environmental)
    factors is vindicated by the advent of the Great
    Depression.
  • Mary Richmond, popularizer of scientific helping
    (cure the person) is taught in Schools of
    Social Work. Her book, Social Diagnosis, is
    considered the first social work textbook.

Inching towards professionalization
  • 1919 Seventeen Schools of Social Work exist in
    the U.S. and Canada, all teaching psychodynamic
    theory (leading to a more professional image).
  • 1920 Women enfranchised
  • 1920s Growth of voluntary organizations (e.g.
    YWCA, CWLA, etc. 363 Community Chests by 1930
    (Huff)

  • 1929 Stock market crashes people lose fortunes
    overnight.
  • 1933 New Deal establishes major programs to
    combat poverty sw turns its attention (back) to
    social reform
  • 1935 THE SOCIAL SECURITY ACT (designed with
    huge contributions by SWs Harry Hopkins (WPA)
    and Frances Perkins (Secretary of Labor).

  • 1936 Emboldened by the success of Bill W. and
    AA, American Assn. for the Study of Group Work is
    formed.
  • 1940s having solved the problem of how to
    cope with environmental deficits, the profession
    returns to social casework.
  • 1950 First licensing of independent social work
    practitioners, in San Diego (KS 1974).

  • 1958 Is Social Work a Profession? is revisited

  • 1964 War on Poverty Food Stamp Program is
    enacted, Bob Dole is instrumental in this (much
    more on this).

    Reconciliation Act ( welfare reform)
  • 2001 GWB administration moves faith-based
    organizations to the foreground, bringing us FULL
    CIRCLE.
