  movement in U.S. and was 1st American woman to
  win the Nobel Peace Prize. Hull House in Chicago
  was her most famous settlement house.

  cities. Pres. T. Roosevelt ended it and miners
  got more for less hrs. Owners got more for
  coal. 1st labor dispute in which fed. govt.
  served as an arbitrator.

  had Justice Dept. sue Co. b/c est. a monopoly
  over northwestern RRs. Supreme Court dissolved
  it.
• American Tobacco vs. U.S. (1911) Tobacco trust
  broken up by Supreme Court under Sherman
  Anti-Trust Act. Included R.J. Reynolds Tobacco
  Co.
• U.S. vs. EC Knight Co. (1895) sugar trust that
  Supreme Court refused to break up.

• Payne Aldrich Tariff bill lowering certain
  tariffs on goods entering U.S. Angered
  Progressives, who stopped supporting Pres. Taft.
  Split Republican party into Progressives and Old
  Guard. Resulted in presidency of Woodrow Wilson
  (D) in 1912.
• Mann Elkins Act fed. law among Progressive
  reforms. Extended authority of Interstate
  Commerce Commission to include communications.
  Supported by Pres. Taft, also strengthened
  government regulation of the RRs
• Robert LaFollette Wisconsin Senator and a
  Progressive presidential nominee best remembered
  as a proponent of Progressivism and a vocal
  opponent of RR trusts, bossism, World War I, and
  the League of Nations.

• Progressive/Bull Moose Party formed by T.
  Roosevelt after he lost the Republican nomination
  to Taft in the 1912 Pres. Election.
• Federal Reserve Act act of Congress that created
  the Federal Reserve System (central banking
  system of U.S.A.). Signed by Pres. Wilson.
