Message from the Director of Graduate Studies
  • It is my pleasure to welcome you to Norfolk State
    University. I am delighted that you will be
    joining the Spartan family. The University is
    committed to providing an educational environment
    that prepares students to compete in a rapidly

Role of the Office of Graduate Studies
  • The Office of Graduate Studies administers the
    Universitys 19 graduate programs in the schools
    of Education, Liberal Arts, Social Work, and
    Science and Technology. The Office is
    responsible to the Provost for the development
    and maintenance of high quality graduate programs.

  • The Office of Graduate Studies is located in the
    James A. Bowser Industrial Education Building,
    Suite 121. Our office hours are Monday thru
    Friday from 8 am to 5 pm. If at any time you
    need assistance, feel free to stop by or contact

  • Fall 2008 departmental counseling and
    registration will occur August 19 22, and
    classes will begin on Saturday, August 23.
    Please check with your graduate program
    coordinator for the exact date of your
    registration. Please view our Academic Calendars

Financial Aid
  • Financial aid may be awarded on the basis of
    merit or need. The Free Application for Federal
    Student Aid (FAFSA) is required to be considered
    for need-based federal and state-funded
    assistance. The FAFSA may be completed online at
    www.fafsa.ed.gov .
  • There are a limited number of Graduate
    Fellowships and Unfunded Scholarships available
    to graduate students enrolled in a minimum of 9
    credit hours with a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
    Students are encouraged to complete the Graduate
    Financial Assistance application form

International Students
  • All international applicants, whose native
    language is not English, are required to
    demonstrate the required level of proficiency in
    the English language. A minimum Test of English
    as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score of 550 is
    required. Information on the TOEFL can be
    obtained at www.ets.org .
  • Staff members in the Office of International
    Student and Scholar Services are available to
    answer questions and assist you. You may visit
