- Act 1 Scene 7, line 28 to the end of the scene

- In these extracts, Macbeth reacts in different
ways to - his circumstances and the people around him.
- Imagine you are going to direct these extracts
for a - class performance.
- Explain how the actor playing Macbeth should show
- his reactions, and give reasons for your
suggestions. - Support your ideas by referring to the extracts
which are - printed on the following pages.

3Things to Avoid
- Avoid using the first person I as a director
you must try to be objective - Avoid contractions doesnt, cant, wont
etc. - Avoid using slang phrases
- Avoid writing generalisations and quotes in your
introduction and conclusion - Avoid using quotes just for the sake of quoting
(ie. without explaining)
4Directors Notes Guidelines
- Voice and Gesture what tone of voice should the
actor use? Should this remain the same or
change? What hand, eye, body or facial gestures
should the actor use? Should these be
exaggerated, simple or natural? - Sound and Lighting what sound effects should be
employed to bring out the actors inner thoughts
and emotions? Should these be in the background?
What lighting effects should be used? Should
these focus on the actor or around? Why? - Costume and Props what costumes should the actor
wear? What colours/fabrics etc.? Why? What
props should the actor have at hand? How should
they be used?

61. Preliminary(1 minute)
- Read the task carefully, highlighting the key
words - Note any bullet point guidelines in the question
- If it helps you, re-write the question in your
own words, making sure you include the key words
72. Planning(13 minutes)
- Draft out your plan in as much detail as you can
- Your essay must have a five part structure
introduction, main body of essay of 3 separate
sections (see writing notes), and a conclusion - Use a planning framework to organise your notes
- Try to sketch in the key quotes youre going to
use - Jot down your Directors Notes for each quote
8Writing the Introduction(3 minutes) 5-6 lines
- Start with the word When, giving a concrete
example of how you would direct an actor to
portray an emotion, thought or action - When Macbeth tells Lady Macbeth that they will
not kill Duncan in Act 1 Scene 7, he is trying to
be strong. This could be shown by the actor
raising his voice - DO NOT QUOTE write the example in your own
words - Explain how your example is relevant to the
question - This is just one way of directing an actor so as
to bring out his inner thoughts and feelings - Announce the three main areas of your essay

- Attempt to write two paragraphs about Macbeths
state of mind or emotions when he is in
conversation with the Servant - Use the Rule of 3 and add a Directors Note for
each paragraph

- Sum up the changes in the character of Macbeth
from Act 1 to Act 5 - At the end of this task, it can be concluded

words
13Re-Read (5 minutes)
- Check for spellings, grammar, punctuation this
could make the difference between a Level 4/5 or
Level 5/6 and above - Do not use tip-ex for corrections
- Cross out mistakes by putting one line through
the error
