Title: Land Biomes

1
Land Biomes 20.1
2
Land Biomes
  • Biome a large area characterized by its climate
the plants and animals that live there

3
FORESTS
  • Mild temps plenty of rain
  • Amount of rain temps determines which type of
    forest
  • Temperate deciduous forest
  • Coniferous forest
  • Tropical rain forest

4
Temperate Deciduous Forests
  • Deciduous means to fall off
  • Lose leaves to save water during winter
  • Many animals thrive
  • Eat leaves, seeds, nuts, insects
  • Avg. rain 29-49
  • Avg. temps 43-82F

5
Coniferous Forests
  • Most trees are conifers
  • Needles cones
  • Waxy coating (cuticle) on needles to keep from
drying out, keeps from being damaged by cold
temps, allows conifers to keep their leaves
    year-round
  • Trees that stay green all year are called
    evergreens
  • Avg. yearly rain 14-29
  • Avg. temps 14-57F

6
Tropical Rain Forests
  • More plants animals than any other land biome
  • Canopy tree tops
  • Poor soil
  • Rain up to 157
  • Avg. temps 68-93F

7
Grasslands
  • Found on every continent but Antarctica
  • Flat or gently rolling hills
  • Temperate grasslands
  • Few trees due to fires, drought, grazing
  • Mostly grasses and flowering plants
  • Large grass eaters and small seed-eating animals
  • Savannas a grassland with scattered clumps of
    trees seasonal rains
  • Found in Africa, India, South America

8
Deserts
  • Deserts biomes that are very dry often very
    hot
  • Plants grow far apart so they dont compete for
    water
  • Shallow roots to get water after a rain
  • Deep roots to get groundwater 100 deep
  • Cactus plants store water in their fleshy limbs
  • Most animals active at night

9
Tundra
  • Tundra a biome that has very cold temps
    little rainfall
  • Polar Tundra
  • Near North South Poles
  • 2nd layer of soil is always frozen (permafrost)
  • Only grasses small shrubs
  • Musk oxen, wolves, caribou, birds, insects are
    common
  • Alpine Tundra
  • Also has permafrost
  • At the top of tall mountains
  • Found above the tree line (where trees cannot
    grow)
  • Gets plenty of sunlight precipitation
