Title: Mexican Immigration
1Mexican Immigration
By Victor Rodriguez
2Immigration from Mexico to the United States was
small until the 1890s, but thischanged after the
expansion of the railroad system. Mexican
immigrants or seasonalworkers from Mexico and
the native population were the main laborers for
the growingcommercial agricultural business,
especially in Texas and in the fertile central
valleys ofCalifornia.
3In 2001 the number of undocumented Mexicans
living in America was at least 3 million. Since
2001 the number of Mexicans crossing over into
America has gone down. Mostly because there are
less jobs for them to work.
4The number of illegal Mexican immigrants living
in California is about 2 million. The number of
illegal Mexican immigrants living in the US is
about 7 to 8 million. The number of illegal
Mexicans who come to live in America permanently
each year is about 300,000. The Migration Policy
Institute takes this information every year.
5Every year up to 500,000 and 1,000,000 immigrants
come to the United Stated illegally. Immigrants
are a rising share of the population, currently
11.5 percent, although this is still below the
record set in 1890 (14.8 percent). Census results
show that the Mexican population in New York City
nearly tripled to 183,813 between 1990 and
2000.
6Since 2001 the amount of illegal Mexican
immigrants being arrested trying to cross into
America has gone down. Maybe because the border
patrol is getting lazy, or maybe because less and
less Mexicans are trying to cross anymore.
7Once the illegal Mexicans get to California they
go to DMV. At the DMV they are issued a permanent
drivers license. It only costs them a 20 or 100
pesos. It also serves a temporary Green-card.
Which they can use in either Mexico or California.
