Title: Difference in Mexican and American Culture

1
Difference in Mexican and American Culture
2
  • Mexico and the United States share a common
border of around 3,141 km on the northern side.
However, despite their close physical proximity,
lots of dissimilarities are observed in
the culture, beliefs, traditions and norms of
social conduct of the people in these two
    countries.

3
  • The culture of the United States has a strong
effect of colonization of British Empire.
Americans have liberally blended their culture
with many other cultures that have been imported
by immigration of various communities from all
over the world. Whereas, the Mexican culture has
retained the complexity of its history. Mexicans
have tried to preserve their culture and
lifestyle in a conservative manner. Some aspects
of the cultures of the United States and the
Mexican people, that show remarkable disparity
    are given

4
Language
  • A vast majority of Mexican people use Spanish
language. In fact, Mexico is the country which
has the largest Spanish speaking population in
the whole world, probably more than even Spain.
This is is due to the fact that Mexico was a
Spanish colony and was under Spanish rule for
almost three hundred years. Under the Spanish
influence, all the native languages of Mexico
lost their vigor. On the other hand, English is
the most popular language among the Americans,
purportedly an influence of British colonization
in the 17th and 19th centuries.

5
Religion
  • Religion has had a very strong influence in the
lives of Mexicans. Around ninety per cent of
Mexicans follow the traditions of Roman
Catholicism. All festivals of the Mexicans are
centered around their religion. While Americans
are also known to be religious, they have a more
    liberal outlook towards religion

People
  • Mexican people are sensitive and emotional by
nature. They try to avoid any kind of
    confrontation. They follow their traditional
customs and etiquette. Mexicans consider titles
and positions as their status symbols and not
    money.

7
  • Americans, on the other hand, are tough by
nature. They feel sensitivity is a form of
weakness. Work is their foremost priority.
Efficient performance is well appreciated among
the Americans. They look at money as a status
symbol that gives them a sense of achievement.

8
Family
  • Family comes first for the Mexicans their
profession comes second. In most Mexican
families, the men work to earn money and the
women take care of the domestic chores. Children
are brought up with a lot of parental care and
attention. They love to settle down in one place
and prefer to stay with their family.

9
  • Americans, on the other hand, tend to give a lot
of importance to their profession, sometimes more
than to their family. Both men and women have a
professional life. So the women in the family
have to work both inside and outside home.
Children are brought up in a more independent
manner, with minimal guidance from parents.

10
Food
  • Mexican foods are famous all over the world. They
are very appetizing because of their flavors as
well as the use of colors and decorations.
    Mexicans prepare different varieties of
corn-based delicacies. They use a lot of spices
and herbs in their cuisines. Though most of their
dishes have originated in Mexico many have some
    Spanish influence also.

11
  •  Americans have a large variety of styles
of cooking. Most of their traditional cuisines
have undergone a sea change over a period of
time, due to the influence of various immigrant
communities. Americans are very fond of meat.
Beef, pork, venison are their favorites. They
like their meat to be prepared in a slow-cooking
    style.

12
Art and Music
  • Mexico has a very rich tradition of folk art.
There are certain common angular and linear
patterns that Mexican artists tend to repeat
often. Crafts like clay pottery is very famous.

realistic style in their art form. They use
different types of paints to make landscapes and
    portraits.

Music
  • Mexican music reflects the flavor of its native
heritage. Their music has a lot of use of drums,
flutes, maracas etc. Their folk songs are known
as 'corridos', which is very popular among
Mexicans and are played during festivals.
American music has a touch of multi-ethnicity.
Jazz, pop, hip-hop, rock and roll are some of the
wide variety of American music. American music is
heard by people across the globe. American music
