Main Idea
Esperanza has a life that has mountains and
valleys, when mama gets sick, Esperanza doesnt
know what to do, or when to do it.
  • Esperanzas dad dies
  • Tio Luis sets their house and land on fire
  • Esperanza and Ramona sneak to Mexico
  • Esperanza and Ramona meet Miguels family
  • Esperanza learns how to change a dirty diaper.
  • Mama gets sick

3
Theme
  • Never give up, even when things seem bad
  • Give everyone a second chance
  • Dont marry a man or woman with evil or rich
    cousins
  • No matter what, things get better
  • Whenever you succeed, try not to look astonished

4
Plot
  • Esperanzas dad dies
  • Abuelita gets better and visits Ramona
  • Isabel gets a kitten
  • Tio Luis burns down Ramonas, Esperanzas, and
    Papas land
  • Esperanza saves Marta even though Marta is really
    mean and is a brat

5
Setting
  • This book has all of the seasons in it. First,
summer, then fall, then winter, and finally
spring. At the beginning of the book, they live
in Mexico, but then they are forced to move to
America because Tio Luis burnt their land and
house down. In Mexico, they lived in
Aguascalientas, but when they moved to America,
they lived in a camp which was located in the
southern area. When they lived in Mexico, they
were very wealthy and life was good for them. In
America, things were very different. First of
all, they had to use the same toilets, which was
across from where their hut/house was. They
barely had any hot water, and there was dirt
    everywhere!
  • My picture is from when they lived in Mexico.

skin. She has long nails, and is Mexican.
  • Esperanza is brave because she helped Marta, even
though she could be killed. She is also nice
because she is kind to everyone.
  • Esperanza is the main character and Ramonas
    daughter.
  • Tio Luis is also Mexican, with black hair, brown
    eyes, and dark skin.
  • Tio Luis is mean. He is mean because he burned
    down Esperanzas and Ramona's land.
  • Tio Luis is Papas cousin, he runs a bank, and he
is forcing Ramona to marry him.
  • Ramona looks exactly like Esperanza, except she
has wrinkles and an older face.
  • Ramona is brave. Ramona is brave because she
    snuck to America.
  • Ramona is Esperanzas mom, and the one that Tio
    Luis wants to marry.
