Summary
  • This story mainly takes place in
    Aguascalientes, Mexico and Arvin, California
during the Great Depression. Esperanza Ortega is
a 12 year old girl who lives on El Rancho de las
Rosas, her familys vineyard. Suddenly a tragedy
strikes which causes Esperanza and her mother,
the beautiful Ramona Ortega, to flee to
California. Esperanza has to leave her Abuelita,
who is her grandmother behind. Esperanza is not
ready to handle the struggles that Mexican farm
workers have to face like financial needs and
hard work. Esperanza must learn to live a new
life as a poor immigrant. She struggles to keep
up with the work load but instantly another
tragedy hits. What happens next? You just have to

Theme
  • I think the author tries to teach people that
there are many ups and downs in life, but that
should not stop you in life. In the book
Esperanza goes through many obstacles in her
life, but she did not stop. Also, when you want
to get something you have to work hard to obtain
    it.
  • Esperanza learns that life is not always the way
you want it to be. At first she is this rich and
happy girl, but when something causes her to move
to California she learns that her life will not
always be perfect. Esperanza also has to work
very hard to gather up some money to bring her
    Abuelita back.
  • These lessons can be applied in life and around
the world around you in many ways. One example is
that if you get a bad grade on a test, you should
not cry and weep about just think about how you
could to better next time. Another example is
that you have to work hard to get good grades and
    you have to maintain them.
