  • April 15 President Lincoln calls for 75,000
    volunteers.
  • April 17 Virginia secedes from the Union.
  • April 19 Confederates occupy Harpers Ferry,
    Virginia (now West Virginia).
  • June 10 Engagement at Big Bethel, Virginia. First
    land "battle" in Virginia.
