9Problems Prospects of F.W.Aquaculture
in Andhra Pradesh
10BASIC CONCERNS
- Lack of comprehensive Inland fishery policy
- Silting up of tanks and Infestation of tanks by
weeds - No new varieties ( other than Catla, Rohu etc)
are introduced - Inadequate conservancy measures , causing
depletion - Unhygienic fish landing centers
- Lack of concern for environmental protection
- Inadequate credit facilities and infrastructure
facilities - Lack of coverage of Aquaculture by Insurance
companies - Low rate of production in reservoirs
11 PRODUCTIVITY (Kg.s /ha. of W.S.Area / pa)

12 Prospects for FW Prawn(Scampi) culture
- We need to improve the income level of the
fishermen - FW Prawn (Scampi) has good export demand.
- It is hardy has no disease problems.
- Cultured in the existing irrigation tanks along
with fish ,without any capital investment - There are adequate no.s of hatcheries ( more than
50 ) to supply sufficient seed. - The culture technology is simple, easy to adopt.
- It can generate addl.income employment.
13FW PRAWN ( SCAMPI) culture
- A.P. stands FIRST in Scampi production
Source MPEDA, Cochin.
14PROJECTIONS FOR FRESH WATER AQUACULTURE
- Promoting Ornamental fish culture.
- Promoting Scampi ( Fresh water Prawn Culture).
- Conducting Awareness camps.
- Mobile disease diagnostic labs.
- Training and extension.
- Promoting Pickle manufacturing.
- Promoting Cage culture and Pen culture.

15Problems Prospects of Coastal Aquaculture

16- FARMERS INVOLVED 73,340 No.s.
- SPECIES CULTURED P.MONODON, P.INDICUS.
- CULTURE METHODS TRADITIONAL
-

17- STATUS OF INFRASTRUCTURE
- PRE HARVEST HEALTH MANAGEMENT
- HATCHERIES -- 130 (7588 million
capacity ) - SHRIMP FEED MILLS -- 28 (1.09 lakh tonnes
per day capacity) -
- DISEASE DIAGNOSTIC LABS ( WITH PCR TESTING

18- Concerns in Coastal Aquaculture
- Loss of Crop due to diseases
- a) First incidence of White spot
disease in 1994 95 - b) Crop holiday helped to improve the
situation - but it was not a lasting solution.
- .
-
-
19- Pro-active measures adopted
- Traditional Improved traditional culture
practices adopted .. - Using of quality PCR- tested seed from hatcheries
is stocked as per norms of stocking - Usage of quality feed and Probiotics .
- Discouraging use of antibiotics .
- Encouraging use of alternate varieties such as
Sea bass( Lates) , Chanos etc. - Setting of ETP units for farm areas of 5 ha
above.
20- Conducting of Awareness camps
- OBJECTIVE Educating farmers on
-
- Eco-friendly culture practices,
- Animal health monitoring and
- Regularisation of shrimp culture
- through Aquaculture Authority etc.,
-
1998-99 1999-00 2000-01 2001-02 - Awareness Camps conducted 21 77
341 360
21- Organization of Aqua clubs
- OBJECTIVE To promote cooperative approaches
in tackling common management practices such as
- water management - quantity and quality
- staggering of seed stocking
- quality of seed feed,
- common health monitoring
- 128 no.s of Aqua clubs ( 3321 members) are
formed.
22- Antibiotic Residue testing labs.
- 4 Antibiotic residue testing labs being set up in
A.P. - One at Vizag by CIFT (ICAR)
- One at Kakinada by Govt. of A.P. (
Dept.of Fisheries ) - One at Bhimavaram by MPEDA
- One at Nellore by MPEDA
- One Mobile lab at Kakinada is being introduced
- .

24PROJECTIONS FOR COASTAL AQUACULTURE
- Fattening of Crabs.
- Disease diagnostic labs.
- Promoting lates culture.
- Promoting fish drying platforms.
- Promoting Hygienic landing centers and Harbors.
- Mobile disease diagnostic labs (PCR) .
- Antibiotic residue testing labs.

25Hoping for better future for Fisheries.
