What is Multicultural Education?

• Historical roots lie in the Civil Rights Movement
  of the 1960s
• Target of public institutions - most oppressive
  to racial equality
• Demand for curricular reform and better hiring
  practices

• In the 1970s, Womans Rights Movement
• Joined the push for education reform
• Curriculum reform inclusive of their histories
  and experiences
• Challenged inequalities in employment,
  educational opportunities, income and sexism
• Challenged the ratio of few female administrators
  to many female teachers

• Constant transformation, refocusing,
  re-conceptualization in theory and practice
• Shift in curriculum (new/diverse material)
• Classroom climate issues
• Teaching styles (focus on certain groups)
• Institutional/systematic issues (tests, funding)
• Larger societal transformation (status quo)
