1The Space Race
Background (ASSA)
2What Happened?
- It began with Soviet Unions launching of the
Sputnik Satellite. - The United States who feared attack from space
drew them into the Space Race trying to catch up
to the Soviet Union. - The Space Race was predominantly the space to the
moon. - The Space Race to the moon ended in July, 1969
when Americans successfully set foot on the moon. - "That's one small step for a man, one giant leap
for mankind." - Neil Armstrong

3Mistrust/Miscommunication
- The Space Race clearly determines the mistrust
and miscommunication between the US and the USSR. - When the USSR launched Sputnik, the US did not
trust them and feared future attack from space.
(no communication was made to try and resolve
this fear) - The USSRs secretively engaged space missions may
have been misinterpreted by the US. - The US did not trust the USSR to dominate space.

between two Great Superpowers The USA and USSR. - Success (in the Space Race) was marked by
headline-making "firsts" the first satellite,

in space, first woman in space, first space
walk. (Smithsonian)
