European society is experiencing constant
technological change. To make informed lifestyle
and career choices, we all need to understand
these changes and the impacts they will have on
our lives. Science theatre makes science more
accessible and understandable to everyone. It is
difficult to measure the impact that science
theatre has on its audience, indeed there is
continuous debate about public feedback. Audience
s don't learn the science in question during a
performance but the images they see, stimulate
emotions, which help them remember. The
information goes to the head through the
heart. Science shows open doors, stimulating
curiosity about scientific questions the audience
may never have considered. The role of the
communicator - those who bridge the worlds of
science and art - has been strengthened and if
science theatre is to continue to move forward,
the future of the actor-communicator can only
become more important.

  • Playing with theatre, playing with science

For more than 20 years we have used a dynamic,
interactive and comic style of theatre to help
non-native speakers approach and enjoy the
English language. Our experience with young
audiences convinces us that these theatrical
methods should not remain an isolated phenomenon,
used only sporadically within a linguistic
context, but should become a point of reference
for the promotion and teaching of scientific
culture, emotionally involving schools, teachers
and students.

La Rotonde, cultural centre for science, develops
a scientific culture policy, with a great
interest in science theatre. The project, called
"Scènes de Méninges", is developed as a network
of different actors of science theatre in France.
It presents workshops, festivals and a data base
of more than 130 plays by professional groups.
It's goal is not to produce new scientists, but
to develop curiosity and start debates on science
in society.

The use of theatre in the different aspects of
museum communication, the fusion of education and
the production of science-theatre drama. A
strong and all embracing relationship between a
theatre group and a science centre can lead to
innovation. The Co-science project, experimenting
synergies among - explainer training - museum
animation - production of science-theatre plays -
scientific playwriting competition - cooperation
