Homage to A Proud Mother Now a proud mother
with all her children well positioned in their
respective professions, Mrs. Rabeya Khatun did
not always enjoy as tranquil a life as it is now.
Her memoirs are those of an intrepid warrior.
Those life long struggles render an epic
magnitude to her current accomplishments. Born
on the 20th of December in 1945 in a noble family
in the village of Howly, Keraniganj, Dhaka, Mrs.
Rabeya Khatun began a fun-filled childhood,
marked with great future potential. However, her
dreams came to a sudden halt when her guardians
drew the final curtain to her educational life.
Then her life drifted along in a pre-determined
pace. After her marriage with Tofazzal Hussain,
she skillfully shouldered the full responsibility
of her in-laws extended family. Just as her
family had been blessed with four lovely children
and was approaching financial affluence, 1971
came along and disheveled their lives in a
significant way. On a single day, a brutal attack
from the Pakistani forces snatched away from her
life her father, brother, and the only elder
sister. Her husband and she, along with their
four children, suffered numerous ups and downs
during those harrowing nine months. Following the
independence of Bangladesh, she picked up the
pieces and resumed a normal family life. She had
always been resolute about her childrens
education. To fulfill this dream, she
single-handedly convinced her husband to wrap up
the tranquil life in the village and relocate in
Dhaka. Thus, in 1974, began the second phase of
her dream build a family showered with
uninterrupted bliss. However, happiness once
again proved to be a mirage in her life. In 1981
her husband suddenly died of an incurable
disease, leaving behind her and their seven young
children. The eldest daughter was yet to complete
her higher secondary education. So the very first
victim, immediately following her husbands
death, was the education of the eldest daughter.
That was just the beginning of her misery. In
1982 she lost a son to the deadly Cancer. Having
lost her husband, a son, and all financial
stability, this mother found herself exiled into
a prolonged depression. But she did not allow
this predicament to extinguish the torch of her
dreams. She rose up from the ashes and shrugged
off all the adversities and never looked back.
Amidst severe financial constraints and numerous
socio-political changes and uncertainties of the
1980s, she took the children under her protective
wings and gradually advanced their education.
That story is very long and haunting! Today she
can indulge in being oblivious to those
misfortunes in the light of her childrens
achievements. Her younger daughter and all four
sons, having obtained the highest degrees from
the university, are savoring the pinnacle of
success in their respective fields. For all they
enjoy today, they express their deepest gratitude
to the Creator above and to this warrior and
proud mother on this earth. Gulshan
