    about money, unjust taxation (according to the
    colonists)
  • Inspiration for rebellion came from the English
    writer John Locke and the Bible
  • Idea of natural rights

  • Jeffersons Declaration of Independence reflects
    these ideas so does the U.S. Constitution
    All men are created equal that they are endowed
    by their Creator with certain unalienable rights
    that among these are life, liberty, and the
    pursuit of happiness.

  • For the past few centuries the Puritan ministers
    preached about a covenant relationship with
    God that superceded human laws
  • Preachers told Biblical stories of rulers
    oppressing Gods people with high taxes and
    unjust laws
  • This leads to Biblical allusions which are easily
    seen in Patrick Henrys Speech in the Virginia
    Convention - 1775

  • Founding fathers argued what to do about slavery
    Native Americans
  • Ironic that they were beginning a revolution
    because they were feeling unjustly oppressed
    yet could not come to an agreement about slaves
    or Native Americans
  • They were fighting for natural rights but did
    not include African Americans, women, Native
    Americans
