1Leadership

2As a leader you needto be a salesman
- What do you sell?
- Your vision.
- Your passion for that vision.
3Have a vision of what you want to achieve and
clearly see the future
- You should have a clear picture of where you will
be in the short term.
- The long term can be allowed to remain a pyramid
in the midst, see it but let it take final shape
as you get closer and closer.
- Be flexible and adapt when necessary (change is
necessary.)
- Stay focused on the goal. Humans are very good at
sticking in new goals and desires, thereby losing
site and focus. Strive to stay focused!
- Align your short and long term goals.
4Have a passion for what you do
- If you cant get excited about what you are
doing, then dont expect others to be energized
about it.
- Your people want to know that you are committed.
This is a key for them AND a key for leadership.
5Tools you need to use
- Common sense
- Understanding of human nature
- Perseverance
- A sense of humor
- A caring for others
- Honesty
- Good listening skills
6Some things about common sense
- Know the history and the reasons for the things
that occur around you.
- There are times to do the right thing
regardless.
- Use good judgment.
- Bureaucrats love rules, leaders DO NOT!
7Some things about human nature
- You cannot take advantage of others over the long
term.
- Short term gains can result in long term losses.
- People will always make it equal in the end.
- Your people expect you to have their best
interest at heart.
- Low self esteem is prevalent in the population.
- Be conscious of that.
- It is best to take the high road and be honest.
- Have a style that can deliver bad news and still
maintain others self esteem.
- High morale is nothing but self esteem in
motion.
8Some things about perseverance
- Try new ways, be creative.
- Seek help AND advice.
- Be adventurous
- Nothing ventured-nothing gained.
- Dont be discouraged by things that dont work
out.
- Be willing to admit errors and take
responsibility for your actions.
- A trait of ALL successful people is a willingness
to stand up and take responsibility and pay for
their mistakes. This is critical and cannot be
STRESSED enough!
9Some things abouta sense of humor
- Humor will take the edge off of a high pressure
work place and it will lead to higher
productivity.
- If you cannot laugh at yourself, then you just
leave the job for others.
- Without humor, man could not survive the
tragedies of life.
- Humor deserves a place in your everyday work life
and in the lives of those around you.
- Life is too short to not have humor as a part of
it.
10Some things aboutcaring for others
- Your people want to know that you have their best
interests at heart.
- Leadership is not the place to feed your own ego
by putting others down.
- By helping other people reach their potential and
seeing them grow, you will benefit more than by
what you can achieve on your own.
- Getting your own way can be costly. People all
have something to contribute.
- You should capitalize on the potential of
everyone.
11Be encouraging
- Let others know that you do have confidence and
believe in them-you will in fact be installing
confidence.
- CAUTION Always be sincere, NEVER phony.
- Kindness and gentleness are not a sign of
weakness, but rather a sign of strength and
resolveKahlil Gibran.
12Some things abouthonesty and morals
- It will always pay off to be honest
- Dishonesty will ALWAYS catch up to you.
- High morals in leadership is not a question of
being there or not being there, but rather, it is
a goal to strive to improve and grow to.
- Life is a boomerang
- What you send out comes back to youWITH DEADLY
ACCURACY!
- Your values can and should determine your path
with your people and business issues.
13Some thingsabout listening
- Dont listen with you mouth, use your ears and
show attentiveness.
- Listen and respond with empathy.
- Dont suggest a course of action or solution
without asking the other person for their ideas
and solutions.
- This technique will gain their ownership in the
answer.
- Compliment them when possible.
- But remember, ALWAYS be sincere.
14Develop your own leadership style
- Each leader has his or her own style, they are
unique to each individual.
- Try to capitalize on your own strengths.
- Continue to confront and address your weaknesses
and your failures.
- Keep striving to improve.
- Monet said at the age of 87, Im still learning!
15Some options in style are
- When confronting another person to have an
impact, improve or change
- Be direct, concise and complete. No nonsense
approach.
- Be gentle, nudging and encouraging.
- A patient and soft approach while being
consistent and determined.
- Be both of the above, varying your style
depending on the individual you are working
with.
16Style options continued
- Learn to be consistent and reliable.
- Your people need to know that you are predictable
in the ways you deal with problems and changes.
- Be angry when you need to. Be angry at situations
and issues, never at another person.
- Anger should not be personalized and directed at
an individual. The damage done by directing anger
at another can NEVER be repaired.
- Use humor in tense situations and take the
problem and people involved to a new place.
- Lets go get a cup of coffee and talk about
this.
17Be flexible andwilling to change
- When a hurricane hits, seaweed survives because
of its flexibility.
- The oak tree is snapped like a toothpick because
it is unbending.
18About Ernest Shackleton
19Learning Shackletons Way
- One personality can influence the whole
environment and mood of the whole company or
venture.
- Picking the right team players is critical to the
success of the venture.
- Provide your workers the best tools available to
get the job done effectively.
20Quotes from Shackleton
- Managed people are simply told what to do, he
says, People who are properly led are motivated
to do whatever is necessary to get the job done
in the finest possible way and they dont need
much instruction
21 22- If you can keep your head when all about you Are
losing theirs and blaming it on you
- If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too
- If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don't deal in lies,
- Or being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise
23- If you can dream - and not make dreams your
master If you can think - and not make thoughts
your aim
- If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two imposters just the same
- If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
- Or watch the things you gave your life to,
broken, And stoop and build 'em up with worn-out
tools
24- If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
- And lose, and start again at your beginnings And
never breathe a word about your loss
- If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
- And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them "Hold on!"
25- If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with kings -- nor lose the common touch,
- If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too
much
- If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run
- Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And -- which is more -- you'll be a Man, my
son!
