Tang Dynasty , China
  • The Tang dynasty (A.D. 618-907), with its capital
at Chang'an ( ), is regarded by historians as a
high point in Chinese civilization--equal, or
even superior, to the Han period. Its territory,
acquired through the military exploits of its
early rulers, was greater than that of the Han.
Stimulated by contact with India ( ) and the
Middle East, the empire saw a flowering of
creativity in many fields. Buddhism ( ),
originating in India around the time of
Confucius, flourished during the Tang period,
becoming thoroughly sinicized and a permanent
part of Chinese traditional culture. Block
printing was invented, making the written word
available to vastly greater audiences. The Tang
period was the golden age of literature and art.
A government system supported by a large class of
Confucian literati selected through civil service
examinations ( ) was perfected under Tang rule.

Tang, China
  • This competitive procedure was designed to draw
the best talents into government. But perhaps an
even greater consideration for the Tang rulers,
aware that imperial dependence on powerful
aristocratic families and warlords would have
destabilizing consequences, was to create a body
of career officials having no autonomous
territorial or functional power base. As it
    turned out, these scholar-officials acquired
status in their local communities, family ties,
and shared values that connected them to the
imperial court. From Tang times until the closing
days of the Qing empire in 1911,
    scholar-officials functioned often as
intermediaries between the grass-roots level and
    the government

Tang Dynasty
  • The Tang Dynasty was est. by a noble named Li
Yuan. Later the Tang empire expanded under
emperor Tai Cong. He created a strong central
government. To work in the Gov. citizens had to
pass a civil service test the test would test
if you had mastered Confucian principles. The
Chinese government became a Meritocracy- a system
in which people were chosen and promoted for
    their talents.

prosperity
  • Empress Wu had a prosperous economy, opened up
areas for farming, encouraged trade. Political
stability and agricultural prosperity helped with
trade and New roads helped in this process. One
road was called the silk road do to the large
amount of silk traded. Buddhist, Christians, and
Islamic religions came due to the silk road. The
tang capital Changan became the largest city in
    the world.

Song Dynasty
  • 907a.d. to 960 a.d.- the song dynasty controlled
china. Zhao Kuangy in took control an started the
Song dynasty. Population increased with trade and
commerce-upper class and middle class enjoyed
high standard of living. Song rulers encouraged
peaceful policies. The Song dynasty did not have
large armies but encouraged public works
    projects(digging ditchs and canals).. They
introduced Tea from South east Asia, faster
    crowing rice,

Song Dynasty
  • It was in Song dynasty China, around 1000 years
ago, that gunpowder, printing and the
compass-three great inventions that were to shape
the course of global civilization-made their
    first appearance.

15
Song Dynasty
  • The Song Dynasty is notable for the development
of cities, not only for the administrative
purposes, but also as centers of trade, industry,
and maritime commerce. A new group of wealthy
commoners -- the mercantile class -- arose as
printing and education spread, private trade
grew, and a market economy began to link the
coastal provinces and the interior. Landholding
and government employment were no longer the only
means of gaining wealth and prestige. Zhu Xi's
philosophy became official imperial ideology and
evolved into a rigid official obligation of
obedience and compliance of subject to ruler,
child to parent, wife to husband, and younger
brother to elder brother. The effect was to
inhibit the societal development of premodern
China, resulting both in many generations of
political, social, and spiritual stability and in
a slowness of cultural and institutional change
up to the nineteenth century. Kublai Klan
defeated the Southern Song to begin the Yuan
    Dynasty in 1279 AD.

Korea Yi Dynasty
  • 1392 - 1910 The ruler of the Yi Dynasty (also
known as the Joseon Dynasty) moved the capital to
    Hanyang-gun (today's Seoul) in 1394 and adopted
Confucianism as the country's official religion.
As a result, Buddhists lost much of their wealth
and power. It was during this period that the
Korean alphabet, Hangul, was invented by King
Sejong the Great in 1446. This period also had
its share of external problems, suffering
invasions by the Japanese (1592-1598) and the
Manchus (1627-1636). With the arrival of Japanese
and Western traders in the 19th century, the
Korean rulers tried to prevent the opening of the
country to foreign trade by closing the borders,
earning Korea its nickname of the Hermit Kingdom.

Korea Yi Dynasty
  • Beginning in 1876, the Japanese forced a series
of Western-style trade agreements on Korea,
leading to Japan's eventual annexation of the
country in 1910. Due to growing anti-Japanese
sentiment, in 1897 King Kojong declared himself
to be emperor of the Taehan Empire, an
    independent Korea. However, during the
    Russo-Japanese War (1904-1905), Japanese forces
moved onto the peninsula, despite Korean
declarations of neutrality. The signing of the
Japan-Korea Protection Treaty in 1905 gave Japan
virtual control over Korea, and in 1910 a Korean
royal proclamation announced the annexation by
    Japan.

also influenced the culture of the Japanese. The

Japan and these clans practiced Shinto the way
