Title: Inner Orientation

1
Inner Orientation
  • Lighting to establish mood and communicate
    emotion
  • Three functions
  • Establishing mood atmosphere
  • Predictive lighting
  • Lighting as dramatic instrument

2
Establish Mood
  • High-Key Lighting
  • Abundance of light
  • Slow falloff
  • Light background
  • Examples
  • news rooms
  • situation comedies
  • Upbeat

3
Establish Mood
  • Low-Key Lighting
  • Less light
  • Fast falloff, highly selective
  • Background predominantly dark.
  • downbeat

4
Above Below Eye Level
  • Based on location of key light.
  • Used to key light being above us
  • Eye-level is the eyes of the subject or middle
    portion of object
  • Above-eye-level normal
  • Below-eye-level disorienting

5
Predictive Lighting
  • Portend upcoming event
  • Change in normalcy
  • Drastic change
  • From high-key to low-key
  • From above-eye-level to below-eye-level

6
Application of Lighting
7
Use of Lighting Instruments
  • Lamps are called Quartz lamps
  • tungsten-halogen lamps
  • 500 200 watts
  • Get very hot
  • Rather expensive (15 per bulb)

8
Attachments to Lighting Instruments
  • Barn Doors
  • Adjustable metal flaps
  • Mask unwanted light
  • Cut down on spill
  • Soft cut off/edge
  • Filter Frames
  • Slide over light
  • Can hold
  • Scrim
  • Diffuser
  • Gel

9
Three Point Lighting
  • In typical lighting setups, lighting instruments
    have four functions
  • KEY LIGHT
  • FILL LIGHT
  • BACK LIGHT
  • BACKGROUND LIGHT

10
Three-Point Light
  • Used to get positive results
  • Used in many situations
  • To picture at right, 4 light sources
  • Key, to left
  • Dim fill, to right
  • Back light, on hair
  • Background light

11
Key Light
  • Main light
  • Most defines appearance
  • Often in middle of hard-soft continuum
  • Placed at a 30? to 45 ? to left or right side of
    the camera.
  • 45? is preferable because brings out texture and
    form.

12
The Key Light
13
Does it matter what side the key light is on?
  • Sometimes.
  • Put the light on the subjects best side.
  • Follow source. Is there a set feature or a story
element that is producing the light?
  • Consistency within the scene.
  • Light for practicality (walls, obstructions, etc.)

14
The Fill Light
  • The key light will produce shadows.
  • One purpose of the fill light is to fill in
    shadows.
  • Placement of fill light
  • Fill light is placed 90? from the key light
  • If you were to draw a line from key to subject to
fill, you would get a right angle.
  • This wide sweep can give coverage if the subject
    moves.

15
The Fill Light
16
Fill Light
  • Should be softer than key light
  • Avoid a second set of shadows
  • Good choices
  • Use a diffuser
  • Use indirect light
  • Using the sun
  • Can use the sun as a key light
  • Use a reflector (or a large white poster board)
to bounce light as a fill.

17
The Back Light
  • Function of the backlight is to separate the
    subject from his/her background.
  • Creates a rim of light around the subject.
  • Sometimes called a hair light
  • If viewed from above, you should be able to draw
a straight line from the backlight to the camera.

18
Back Light
19
Vertical Placement of Lights
20
Background Lights
  • Used to illuminate the background area.
  • Add depth between scene elements.
  • Can use any type of light
  • Should be fairly even illumination.
  • Often placed on same side as the key light.
