Giant Panda
  • Kingdom Animalia
  • Phylum Chordata
  • Class Mammalia
  • Order Carnivoria
  • Family Ursidae
  • Genus Ailuropoda
  • Species Melanoleuca

4
Explanation of previous slide
  • Animalia The Animal Kingdom
  • Chordata Vertebrates
  • Mammalia Mammals
  • Carnivoria Carnivores
  • Ursidae Bears
  • Ailuropoda Giant Panda
  • Melanoleuca Giant Panda

5
The Giant Panda is
  • An endangered species
  • As old as the Pleistocene era, or roughly 600,000
    years
  • 4-6 feet in height
  • Adults up to 350 lb.
  • Lives primarily upon bamboo
  • Are able to mate at about 6 years of age

6
It is also
  • In size, it is the same as an American Black Bear
  • Has a bone in the wrist that enables it to grasp
    trees
  • Has a mostly black body, with a largely white
    head
  • Has patches of black fur around its ears and eyes

7
Interesting Facts
  • Formerly of the raccoon family
  • Now in the bear family (ursidae)
  • Mainly live on bamboo
  • Formerly a carnivore during the earlier ages of
    its existence, now omnivorous
  • Daxiongmao is the original Chinese name, meaning
    large bear cat

8
A Place To Call Home
  • Indigenous to Burma
  • Now remain only in areas of China
  • Live in dense forest areas and bamboo forests

9
Captivity
  • As the population of Giant Pandas dwindles, more
zoos are trying to preserve the species
  • There are currently 124 Giant Pandas in Chinese
zoos, and about 20 in others
  • The current estimate of Panda numbers in the wild
    is about 1,000

10
Breeding
  • Can breed at four to ten years of age
  • Spring is the Giant Pandas breeding season
  • Twins often born, but only one of them usually
    survives

11
Defense
  • Sadly, the Giant Panda has few defenses. The
heights at which they live are an advantage, but
other than that they are largely incapable of
    defending themselves.

12
Adversaries
  • Man is its primary enemy. So far, poachers have
hunted the pandas to the brink of extinction. As
far as this researcher can tell, we are its threat

13
Communication
  • Thus far, a giant pandas method of communication
(if there is one) has not been identified. They
can roar, hiss, and possibly make other noises
    not yet identified.

14
Identification
  • Different from most other bears, it is easy to
tell if youve found a Giant Panda.
  • Look for the distinctive spots around the eyes
    and ears.

15
NOISE
  • Here Goes!
