- Harvey Kushner is a professor in
the Department of Criminal Justice at Long Island
University. He has studied terrorism for 30
years and is a nationally recognized expert in
the field. -
- Reference User Services Quarterly,
American Library Association. It is rare to find
a reference volume both timely and as well done
as this effort. Considering the importance of
its subject, its global and historic coverage,
and its value to researchers, students, the
general reader, and law enforcement, this book is
a must for every library. -

14Personal Impression
- The author was in the process of writing this
book when 9-11 occurred and in the rush to
publish, I believe it was compromised and is not
as global and comprehensive as it could be. The
numbering was forgotten on the Map of Asia
Reference Table (could be a printing problem) and
the Chronology Table refers only to the
terrorists of concern to the United States.
However, I found The Encyclopedia of Terror very
informative and I believe it should be included
in any basic reference collection.
15Who was responsible for the subway attack and
when did it happen?
16Aum Shinrikyo
. Aum Shinrikyo, a cult founded in 1985 by Shoko
Asahara, perpetrated the 1995 sarin gas attack on
the Tokyo subway that killed 12 people Aum
Shinrikyo began in 1984 in a storefront by
offering yoga and religious seminars. Claims that
believers could acquire the ability to levitate,
read minds and teleport, started attracting
followers. The cult became very powerful and
began attacking people that opposed them with
chemicals. When they attacked the subway,
hundreds of their members were arrested,
including Shoko Asahara, and the cult retaliated
with more attacks. The cult has changed their
name to Aleph meaning The Beginning and has
even a larger membership and has spread to other
countries including the United States.
