Clauses Matter!
  • Sentences can be classified based on the types of
    clauses they contain.

Simple Sentences
  • One independent clause and no subordinate clauses
  • Beyonce changed her dress several times.
  • This simple dress was black.

Compound Sentences
  • Two or more independent clauses
  • No subordinate clauses
  • Joined by a semicolon, comma and a coordinating
    conjunction
  • and, but, for, nor, or, so, yet
  • Natalie's dress was somewhat sheer, but it was
    not scandalous.
  • Natalies dress was an unusual olive green, but
    the color looked lovely on her.

Complex Sentences
  • One independent clause AND at least one
    subordinate clause
  • Halles dress was simply elegant, even though it
    was a little more complex.
  • It was silvery, which was highlighted by the
    sparkly things at the waist.
  • Because she was walking, the picture shows her
    train flying behind her, since it was made of a
    lighter material.

Compound-Complex Sentences
  • TWO or more independent clauses AND at least one
    subordinate clause
  • Selmas dress was very complicated and it was
    awfully busy, because it combined several
    different styles.
  • It is hard to see the black pattern, which is of
    roses, because the dress is dark blue, but it
    matches her hair.
