The Fall of theRoman Empire in the West
  • Emperor Constantine Made Christianity legal, in
    Rome.
  • In the Year 330, he moved to the Roman Empires
headquarters eastward from Rome to the city of
    Constantinople.
  • When the succeeding emperor died in 395, The
Roman Empire was split in two, never again to be
    reunited.
  • IN conclusion to this, there was chaos, and
problems with the Church, and Religion.

3
Saint Augustine
  • He became bishop of the North African city of
    Hippo in 395.
  • Saint Augustine taught that the sacrament of
Baptism confers a new character on that person.

4
ST. AUGUSTINE
  • He had a broad view of Sacraments.
  • To him, sacraments included not only rituals
such as baptism but also the sign of the cross,
The Lords Prayer, oil used for anointing.
  • He believed that almost anything could be a
sacrament, or a sign of God, because of all
creation was a reflection of God.
  • He also believed that many things could be
    sacraments.
  • He also believed that some sacraments were more
    important than others.
  • It would be more than 800 years before the
church, guided by the Spirit, limited its use of
the word SACRAMENT to the 7 officials rituals
    celebrated by Catholic Christians today.

5
Sacramental Practice in the Dark Ages
  • Sacramental practice changed, largely because of
the social and cultural confusion of the Dark
    Ages.
  • For Example
  • Confirmation became separated from Baptism.
  • Public penance was replaced by private
    confession.
  • Anointing of the sick became Anointing of the
    Dying.
  • Marriage came to be seen as a sacramental rite.

6
Sacramental Practice in the Dark Ages
  • By the year 1000, social political stability
began to return to Europe, the world of the Roman
    Church.
  • Once again this centered on the studying the
    Christian faith.
  • This was the time for looking at the meaning of
    Sacramental symbols and rituals.
