Fleet Safety Program
  • Why are we concerned about Fleet Safety?
  • GSA spent 30 million in direct costs related to
accidents and incidents last year. That is only
a small portion of costs incurred.
  • Indirect costs include items such as time off
    training, legal expenses, lost productivity,
emergency responses. These are costs you as an
agency incur, and they make up to 80 of the cost
    of an accident!

22
Fleet Safety Program
  • Ten most common driver errors
  • 1. Excessive speeding
  • 2. Failure to wear seat belts
  • 3. Inattentiveness, eating, drinking, smoking,
    radio volume
  • 4. Distraction inside the car (changing a CD in
    the CD player)
  • 5. Inadequate defensive driving techniques

23
Fleet Safety Program

    vehicles on the open road

Tire Safety
  • Proper Tire Inflation
  • The Critical Link
  • According to the U. S. Rubber Manufacturers
Associations poll conducted by Fredericks Polls
    in 2001.
  • Only 11 of all drivers checked their tire
    pressure within the previous month.
  • Only 11 of all drivers knew the vehicle
manufacturer was the source of proper inflation
    figures for their tires.
  • Only 11 of all drivers knew to check the tire
pressure when the tires are cold.
  • 24 thought under inflated tires are best for a
long trip in a fully loaded vehicle for passenger
    comfort.

29
Tire Safety
  • Proper Tire Inflation
  • The Critical Link
  • By September 2007, all vehicle manufacturers are
required to equip new vehicles with an automatic
tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS). TPMS
will alert the driver when one or more of their
tires are below a specified level as designated
    by the manufacturer.
