KS3 English
  • The Shakespeare Paper

2
Information
  • The Shakespeare Paper takes 1 ¼ hours and is in
    two parts
  • Shorter Writing Task (30 minutes)
  • 2. Shakespeare Reading (45 minutes)

3
Shorter Writing
  • The question will be linked by theme to your
Shakespeare play but you do not need to mention
    the play.
  • You should spend 30 minutes on this part
  • 5 10 minutes should be spent planning.
  • Marks are awarded for organisation (including
paragraphing), use of sentences, style and
    spelling.

4
Shorter Writing
  • Underline the key words in the question.
  • Note the form, purpose and audience.
  • Plan - as with longer task brainstorm, divide
    main points into paragraphs.
  • Three main paragraphs with a short opening
paragraph and a concluding paragraph are enough.

5
Shorter Writing (Continued)
  • Concentrate on
  • Topic sentence at start of each paragraph.
  • Variety of sentences (long/short mixture, simple
    and complex mixture)
  • Interesting connectives (not just and, but, so
    and then).
  • Effective and interesting word choice.
  • Spelling.

6
Shakespeare Reading
  • You will have 45 minutes to answer the
    question.
  • You will be given extracts from the two scenes
    that you prepared in class.

7
Shakespeare reading question
  • Underline the key words in the question.
  • Plan the main points that you will make.
  • Skim through the passages and highlight two to
four short quotes from each section that you will
    use.

8
Shakespeare Reading (2)
  • You will need in your answer to refer to and
quote from BOTH of the extracts.
  • As in your Reading Test, remember P.E.E. (Point
    Evidence Explanation).

9
Quotes
  • Only use short quotes.
  • Use these quotes to show what you know about
  • How the characters think or feel
  • How Shakespeare involves the audience
  • Always explain why the quote is effective.

10
All the time
  • Keep picturing what the scene looks like and how
    the audience might react.

11
Try to show
  • that you can interpret those scenes,
  • that you can comment on the language Shakespeare
    uses
  • that you have opinions about the scenes which you
    can explain.

12
Finally Remember
  • You will start with the Shorter Writing Task
(half an hour). It is marked for writing and you
do NOT have to say anything about your
    Shakespeare play.
  • THEN you will do the Shakespeare Reading Task
for ¾ hour. Here you will answer a question about
your Shakespeare scenes. Remember PEE !

13
And
  • Keep your concentration.
  • GOOD LUCK!
