Lets start!
3
What is vegetation?
  • Vegetation refers to the plants or plant
communities covering the land surface of a
    particular place.
  • Vegetation is affected by interacting factors,
e.g., climate, relief, parent material, time,
    organisms (including humans), and disturbance
    (e.g. natural fire, landslides, floods
    anthropogenic forest cutting and clearing)

4
Vegetation is important
  • It..
  • Prevents soil erosion and flooding
  • Makes green and beautify countryside
  • Provides a place for wild animal and plant to
    live
  • Provides a public place of entertainment for
    people

5
Common vegetation types found in Hong Kong
  • Streams
  • Grasslands
  • Scrublands
  • Woodlands
  • Sandy beaches
  • Mangrove vegetation

We will talk about it
6
A Visit to Kowloon park
  • For observing and learning more about the
woodland characteristics, I went to Kowloon park
to study because it is accessible and big.

7
The map of Kowloon park
8
Density of vegetation
  • I think it is low.

9
Floor of the woodland
  • I think there is light in the floor of the
    woodland.

10
The variety of vegetation
  • There are about 70 to 100 kinds of plants.

11
The height of the vegetation
  • The height of tree is about 4 to 28 meters.
  • The height of bush is about 0.5 to 2.9 meter.

It is about 300 years old!!!
Chinese Banyan
12
The roots of the vegetation
Acacia Confusa
Big-leaved Fig
Lebbeck Tree
  • The roots are aerial and buttress.

13
The shape and size of leaves
African tulip tree
Peepul Tree
Chinese Banyan
  • Most of the shape and size of leaves are medium
    with drip tips.

The observation ends here.
14
Reflection of the trip
  • I learn and see more plants.
  • I think the trip was interesting because I had
never been such a big park.
  • The most impressive thing in the trip was that I
saw the pigeons drinking water and swimming in
the pond. In fact, they are taking a bath in the
    pond.

Lets see what conclusion I draw
15
The characteristics of woodland in Hong Kong
  • Below is the conclusion of characteristics of
woodland in Hong Kong according to the
observation and other details from the internet.

Lets me tell you what the other detail are.
16
Other details about woodland
  • Hong Kong has 400 local kinds of trees and 200
    external kinds of trees.
  • The ratio between non-ornamental plants and
    ornamental plants is 7426.
  • The total number of trees in Hong Kong is 10742
and is divided into 271 groups.
  • The largest total number of trees is in Kowloon
    park.

17
Think Think Think
  • Suggests
  • Plant more ornamental plants
  • Plant more local kinds of trees
  • Plant more trees
  • What you can think deeply
  • Why do the ornamental plants only occupy about
    20?
  • Why do the external trees occupy more than 70 in
    Hong Kong?

Lets see the answers.
18
What are the problems of woodland in Hong Kong?
  • For those questions, we know that Hong Kong has
    not enough trees.
  • Hong Kong is difficult to find a place to plant
    many trees.
  • It proves that Hong Kong has the problem of
    deforestation.

19
What is deforestation?
  • It means that somebody cut the trees in the
    forest.

20
The causes of deforestation
  • Mining
  • Building roads
  • Forest fire
  • Overuse and over cutting the wood
  • The forests are used for farming
  • Peoples environmental consciousness is low
  • Development of city, industry and commerce

21
Deforestation affects
  • Deforestation affects animals and people leading
    to
  • Flooding
  • Soil erosion
  • Threatening natives
  • Species disappear
  • The change of climate
  • Decreased economic benefit
  • Decrease in natural resources

22
Think Think Think
  • Deforestation is serious and we should
  • prevent it. But
  • Can we use the woodland continuously?
  • How to use the woodland in the best way?

Do you know the answer?
23
What are their opinions?
  • Different people have different attitudes of
    developing forests.
  • Protect the forests and do not develop
  • Natives
  • Develop forest continuously
  • industrialists

24
The best uses of woodlands
  • Establish national park
  • Develop ecological tourism in forest
  • Build protective areas for natives
  • Managing forest with correct methods
  • Only cut a small area of trees
  • Cut the trees which have commercial value
  • Stop cutting trees in areas which have serious
    deforestation

25
What can we do?
  • Join environmental groups
  • Reuse
  • Use other thing to replace wood or paper
  • Reduce using the product made of wood and paper.
  • Learn more about forest from the internet and
    book etc.

26
What can the government do?
  • Re-plant the vegetation
  • Control the birthrate to reduce the demand of
    resources
  • Educate the people about the importance of forest
  • Establish country park or nature reserve to
    protect animals, plants and natives
  • Set up laws to protect the forests
  • The government needs to look after forest
    resources
