3Where can we find Woodlands in Hong Kong today?
In Hong Kong, though small in size, the flora
is diversed in character and surprisingly
numerous in species. The major vegetation of
Hong Kong belongs to the evergreen broad-leaved
forest of the subtropics. Besides those
representatives of southern China, many species
are typical of the Southeast Asian tropical
flora. They are also seen here at the limit of
their northern distribution range. About 3100
species and varieties of vascular plants have
been recorded in Hong Kong, around 2100 of which
are native and the rest are of exotic origin.
The diverse plant species in Hong Kong are our
invaluable resources, which deserve our
appreciation and effort to conserve them.

4- Woodland in Hong Kong is generally limited and
lies in lowland areas, ravines or at the edges of
villages. It consists of the following main
communities (derived from the SUSDEV Habitat Map
classification) - Lowland Forest
- Plantation or Plantation/Mixed Forest
- Fung Shui Forest
- Montane Forest
- Riparian Woodland

6What are the characteristics of woodland in Hong
Kong?
The trees are not too far away from each other.
It is about 0.5 meter from two trees. The
bamboos are very close together. Those are not
really tall, only two and half peoples height
because there are many shrubs, little arbor and
fernery. Phyllanthus emblica is really short. The
roots of all the trees in there are underground
and doesn't like the buttress roots in
rainforests. We cant see and measure how long
the roots are. The leaves are not very broad and
do not have wax on the surface. It only has a
little climbers on the trees trunks. The trunks
are also very thin, just look like lampposts.

7Type of trees in Wong Shek Tree Walk
It had many different types of treed at Wong
Shek Walk. It includes Taiwan Acacia, Sapium
sebiferum, Myrobalan Phyllanthus emblica, Litsea
cubeba, Diospyros morrisiana Hance, Litsea
glutinosa, schima superba, acacia auriculiformis

11What are the causes of the problem?
Chopping down large amount of trees for land
use or producing paper, wood furniture,
construction materials, etc. Using chemicals
which destroy the ozone layer, polluting the air
and kill the plants. This makes this living thing
extinction. Hong Kong has five types of pollution
such as air pollution, water pollution, land
pollution, noise pollution and light pollution.
This speeds up the unregulated cutting of timber
and makes some living things extinct of command.
Careless use of fire and leaving the kindling
behind leads to hill fire. Uses too many and
reproduces too many that destructs ecological
equilibrium.
P.10
12How do these problems affect our lives?
Because of the people chop down too many trees
that make the desertification spread. Except
this, The massive logging causes the oxygen to
reduce but the carbon dioxide increases. The
types of animals become less and less, like White
tiger. It made the ecology unbalance. The food
chain also receives the destruction. Finally
humanity is also influenced. Chopping down large
amount of trees creates the water and soil
massive outflows causes the fertile farmland to
become the desert. Because some rivers encounter
the pollution, fish and shrimp tend to perish.
The human livestock life has been endangered.
Excessively emissions of waste gas and automobile
exhausts change the sky to gray colour.
P.11
13Are we able to solve the the problems?
We are able to solve the problems. First,
residents can join the Plant for the Earth
project it can improve the outskirts park
environment let the trees absorb carbon dioxide
in the air to reduces the global warming
phenomenon. After many years, there will be new
woodland for people to use. We also use fewer
chemicals in the activities of daily livings it
can protect ozonosphere.
P.12
14What is the best use of our woodland?
The forests best use should be preserving the
original condition. Destroyed the forest not only
has caused the death of animals plants it
affects the ecological equilibrium and the food
chain and the weather and the natural
circulation systems of the Earth. Protects the
forest well it can give us the rewards takes
advantages from the forests.
P.13
15How can we help protect our woodland and tropical
rainforests?
- The government or the environmental protection
organization help the control of contamination
concern. - Reduced waste
- Legislation control
- Uses fewer fuel
- Decreases destruction
