Title: Discuss membership status

1
  • Discuss membership status
  • Are there missing organizations or key people
  • Approve/disapprove of proposed nominations
  • Ensure WDC rep is on the ET to meet GEOSS recs-
    Kurt represents this
  • Fed agencies must meet national archive schedules
    - Prescott is rep
  • Need to review these schedules for disposition by
    record type
  • Do we need a rep knowing services architecture
    (context of OAI?)
  • Associate members list for internationals and
    others (JCOMM (WMO), IODE- international
coordinated through IC) - mailing list
  • CoML participation here is tentative - perhaps
    better from transport
  • Need someone from NASA Goddard (for ocean colour)
  • Work through private sector caucus for
    participation
  • John Bates?, David Levinson? from Asheville
  • Eliot Christian?, John Faundeen? of USGS - may be
    more than one player

2
  • Review AET the work plan
  • Short and long-term elements
  • Clarify and identify missing objectives
  • Get first cut at priority ranking of objectives
  • AET will re-address the same
  • Archive function needs to deal with distributed
data sets and delivery schedule to national
    archives and mutual access points
  • DMAC plan stresses that providers seek hosts at
national centres to help provide adequate archive
    functions
  • How to change the archive problem from a national
archive centre pull to a provider push
  • Early demonstration
  • Data version issues, lineage (real-time vs
    delayed)
  • Supplement archive architecture model with high
    end use cases explicitly
  • Extract information from present documentation to
    be presented to ET
  • Kurt has 3 page doc for initial presentation of
    OAI for Chicago meeting
  • Produce a list of functions, ask archives how
they meet these and then review commonalities and
    gaps
  • Concerns about present implementations of SOA,
UDDIs, etc. as the final solution

3
  • Review AET the work plan
  • Short and long-term elements
  • Clarify and identify missing objectives
  • Get first cut at priority ranking of objectives
  • AET will re-address the same
  • Specify criteria for DMAC certification? -
encompasses all ETs work and first cut by Jan,
    2006
  • Look for collaboration with NARA to store open
ocean records in Stennis ERA work in context of
    DMAC requirements?
  • What is the role of DMAC in managing physical
samples / collections? - suggest ST look at this
  • Ask metadata team to include certain fields for
    archive management
  • AET to create starter list at first meeting and
    plan to develop
  • CLASS has a sample submission agreement, Fed CIO
Council list that can help define fields
  • Need to get these metadata needs into RFPs
  • Archives need a front end to receive and
distribute data and need to connect our
discussions to Transport - Keeley to extract info
from JCOMM E2E project for Chicago
  • Establish a measure of effectiveness of AET
  • Dec , 2006 for initial version of archive
    standards and guidelines
  • Include international input

4
  • Review AET the work plan
  • Short and long-term elements
  • Clarify and identify missing objectives
  • Get first cut at priority ranking of objectives
  • AET will re-address the same
  • Who in DMAC will create inventory of data sets
(archives for their holdings) for other data
outside archives? (related to push and pull
    responsibilities between providers and archives)
  • Ensure SEMP includes evolution of technology

5
Short term objectives
  • Legacy data identify, inventory, assess gaps and
    risks, set priority work order.
  • Define an IOOS archive function model and survey
existing centers to assess how functions are now
    being achieved
  • Inventory access methods FTP, HTTP, OPeNDAP,
    offline, Web Services, etc
  • All data are not equal. Define matrix for
    categories, storage requirements, and retention
    period (may be preliminary)
  • Get commitment from and name IOOS/DMAC Archive
    Centers
  • Define metadata requirements specific to archive
    management
  • Define ways that centers can create and
equivalently populate DMAC catalogues with legacy
    discovery metadata
  • Define baseline system-wide metric measures data
    input and output, users
  • Coordinate and collaborate internationally with
    similar programs
  • Advance prototype systems to operational status
that demonstrate data flow from the observation
measurement to archive with levels of access
    meeting IOOS goals, e.g. GSTPP
  • Publish initial version of IOOS Archive Standards
    and Guidelines

6
Long-term objectives
  • Secure and backup irreplaceable archives
  • Establish archive and access policy and
    procedures to resolve questions
  • Establish more IOOS data pathways for
    observations to the archives
  • Cost effective and low impact (centers/users)
transition to systems using DMAC standards
  • Define system-wide metric measures and process
    for reporting
  • Fill data gaps
  • Data integrity
  • Establish procedures and protocols to resolve
data flow and problems with providers
  • Procedures to harden archives against corruption
    and verify content
  • Assure data preservation through media and system
    life cycles
  • Maintain constancy in data format and software to
    assure access
  • Proactively work with observation system
implementers to confirm standards and archive
    data delivery
  • Promote value added data submissions from the
    scientific community

7
  • Round table discussion to identify in kind
    activities
  • Leverage and coordinate with others work
  • Discuss archive model (in context of OAI?) and do
    the services defined
  • Take up with AET to hear highlights of archive
    activities.

8
  • Discuss cross connections between AET and other
    ETs and Caucuses
