Character Types
  • Protagonist-Central character, action centers of
    him/her, usually the reader/audience sympathizes
    with them the most.
  • Antagonist- The character or force that opposes
    the protagonist in the literary work.

Character Types Cont.
  • Foil-a character who serves as a contrast to
    another perhaps more primary character, so as to
    point out specific traits of the primary
    character. Ex. Romeo and Tybalt in Romeo and
    Juliet
  • Confidant-a minor or secondary character in a
    play (or other literary work), in whom the
    protagonist confides, revealing his or her state
    of mind in dialogue.

Dramatic Terms
  • Aside-short speech delivered by an actor in a
    play, expressing the characters thoughts. It is
    directed to the audience and is inaudible to the
    other characters.

  • Monologue- A speech by one character in a play.
    May be addressed to the audience or another
    character.
  • In Act II, Scene I, of Julius Caesar, p. 712,
    Brutus delivers a monologue citing reasons to
    assassinate Caesar.

  • Soliloquy- Long speech expressing the thoughts of
    a character alone on stage.
  • In Act III, Scene I, p. 758, Mark Antony gives a
    soliloquy revealing his true emotions about the
    death of Caesar and his feelings about the
    conspirators.
