A glassware manufacturer wishes to reduce the
time it takes to produce a metal mould with such
intricate design. With scanning an artist can now
carve the design on plaster, scan and have a IGES
surface to machine the mould out.

19Stamping A Car Seat
Using the PET software the data can be export in
ASCII format to be taken in by a CAD software
like Surfacer and a surface can then be created
from the point cloud data.

Reverse engineering, using a CMM to obtain the
profile of this car panel would take 8 to 10
hours depending on the CMM machine and accuracy.
This example was scan with the VIVID 900 in an
hour, the scanned data was then edited to get a
good polygon model. NURBS surfaces can be created
to be exported into CAD software.

NURBS Surface in Maya
The creation of a CG character is one of the most
challenging task an animator has to work on.
Using 3D scanning technology the features of a
human model can be captured easily and exported
into an animation software like Maya. NURBS
surfaces are created and bones are added into the
model. Once done the animation process can begin.
23Medical Applications.
Tradition tools of medical diagnosis presents
information in 2D, for e.g x-rays. However, we
are living in a 3D world, people are 3D. The
improvement of technology has allowed the merging
of surface scan and other 3D imaging data. The
result is better understanding and treatment of
the patient.
