1
AW United 2008-2009 Programming
  • Brian Billings
  • AW United Director of Player Development

2
Our Club
  • We are AW United, not Pacesetter, GTFC, TFA,
    Perrysburg, or any other club!
  • What are our unique characteristics?
  • What do our members look like?
  • Program changes for 2008-09.
  • Coaching.
  • Tryouts for 2008-09.

3
Club Characteristics
  • Our challenge is to deal with our wide diversity
    in members.
  • For example, commitment levels, playing
    abilities, outlook, etc.
  • The goal becomes to provide a basic level of
programming that appeals to all while allowing
those more committed/interested players to still
    be engaged.

4
My Role
  • Write curriculum to guide instruction throughout
    the club.
  • Guide the recruitment and introduction of new
    coaches.
  • Have less coaching responsibility to allow
    movement to observe and help.
  • Continue to set up extra programming.

5
Overall Program Changes
  • Move to looking at 2-year age groupings.
  • Allows more flexibility in player development.
  • Offer more optional training
  • Allow players who want more soccer to train and
those with conflicts to make up missed sessions.
  • 3 sessions age group, team, optional.
  • Offer training across age groups.

6
Training Schedule
7
Overall Program Changes
  • Increasing our technical competency.
  • New structure for paid staff coaches.
  • U9/U10 none, U11/U12 multiple team trainers,
    U13/U14 head coaches.
  • Recognizing each player as an individual!
  • Placing them in a situation that will both
challenge them and allow them to flourish.
  • Decreasing the number of games (specifically
weeknight games) to increase the opportunities
    for training.

8
U-8 Academy
  • Continue to expand the U-8 Academy.
  • Goal being to continue to develop technical
    skills at the youngest ages.
  • Went from 13 players in the fall to 23 players in
    the spring.
  • Look to hit 28 players in the fall.
  • Bring in a dedicated staff coach to assist in the
    running of the Academy.

9
U9/U10 Programming
  • Volunteer parents with direct oversight from me.
  • Dedicated skill training from me frequently (once
every other week per age group)
  • Evaluate numbers and talent bases to determine
    proper team formations.
  • Look at what is best for the individual.

10
U9/U10 Programming
  • Choice between moving to OYSAN SL Academy program
    or staying with NWOYSL.
  • Benefits of moving?
  • More flexibility in not worrying about player
    numbers.
  • Better training to game ratio.
  • Club passes allows different team formations.

11
U11/U12 Programming
  • Examine numbers and age groups to determine best
    team formations.
  • A/B teams vs. balanced teams.
  • Reasoning?
  • Examine competitive divisions to choose league
    play.
  • Look to offer more dedicated players more options
    to train/play.

12
U13/U14 Programming
  • One dedicated A team per gender per age group
    placed into challenging league.
  • Form development teams (13/14) to play in NWOYSL
    if numbers allow.
  • Each team would be run by a qualified, paid
    coach.

13
Coaching 2008-09
  • Every interested coach (paid and volunteer) needs
    to apply.
  • Coaches will be selected and placed by the DOPD.
  • Coaches are expected to follow all club and
    training policies.
  • No running to run.
  • 50 playing time rule (U9-U12)

14
Tryouts 2008-09
  • Every kid will be officially evaluated by having
    their own unique number.
  • One coach (or multiple if numbers are high) will
run tryouts while others simply evaluate players.
  • Coaches and DOPD will sit down and then create
teams to best suit each age group.

15
Adult League
  • We will continue to offer our Adult League this
    summer.
  • Last summer, we had Mens Open and Coed.
  • This spring we have 5 Womens teams playing on
    Thursday nights.
