3 Categories of Violence
  • Type 1 Violence originates _at_ school and is
    carried out _at_ school.
  • Type 2 Violence originates _at_ school and is
    carried out away from school.
  • Type 3 Violence originates outside of school and
    is carried out _at_ school.

Statistics.
  • U.S. Department of justice
  • Every day in the U.S. 100,000 children carry
    some type of weapon to school
  • Mostly guns
  • As many as 40 children are injured or killed by
    guns every day
  • On any given day there are more than 90,000
    youngsters being held in juvenile facilities.

Statistics.
  • From 1992-1996, teachers were victims of about
    316,000 nonfatal and property crimes _at_ school
    including 18,000 serious violent crimes!
  • In 1998, every school day, 6,250 teachers were
    threatened with injury and 260 are assaulted!
  • More than 28,000 students and 5,000 teachers are
    physically attacked in our schools each month!

  • School violence has increased over 50 in the
    last 10 years!
  • Over 50 of all those arrested for any violent
    offense in America are teenagers!

Not reporting?
  • In 1996-97, 10 of all public schools reported _at_
    least 1 serious violent crime.
  • 47 reported _at_ least 1 less serious or nonviolent
    crime.
  • 43 of public schools didnt report any of these
    crimes to police!!!

  • Male
  • Young
  • Low verbal IQ
  • Do poorly in school
  • No friends
  • Impulsive
  • One or both parents were also juvenile offenders
  • Experiment with drugs or alcohol
  • Difficulty in placing themselves in others shoes
    and feeling as they feel

Juvenile Offenders
  • These boys account for no more than 5 or 6 of
    the population of young boys of a given age in
    the entire country but, that 5 or 6 can produce
    ½ or more of all of the serious crimes in the
    country.

Profile of Potentially Violent Student
  • Influenced by cults, cult music, or heavy metal,
    and rap music
  • Problems with drugs and alcohol
  • Excessive stress in the home such as divorce of
    parents
  • Problems with depression
  • Male
  • Between ages of 11-18
  • Usually described as a loner
  • Fascination for weapons of all sorts
  • Fascination with killing
  • Past conduct problems or problems with authority
  • Cruelty to animals

  • Columbine High School Littleton, CO 4/20/99
  • Two teenage boys (Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris)
    start shooting classmates and detonating bombs.
  • 15 dead, many injured
  • Boys were being harassed by athletes for being
    different

  • Princess Anne, MD 4/23/99
  • A high school senior was arrested when students
    saw him loading a .40-caliber handgun.
  • Heritage High School Conyers, GA 5/20/99
  • A sophomore opened fire son students with a
    .22-caliber rifle.
  • No one killed, but several injured.
  • School was in an affluent suburb of Atlanta.

  • Springfield, OR 5/21/98
  • Kip Kinkel, 15 year-old freshman, kills parents
    then goes to school and kills 2 students and
    injuring 19.
  • He was suspended from school the day before.

  • Wimberly, TX 4/23/99
  • Four 14-year-old 8th graders were taken into
    custody for conspiracy to commit murder, arson,
    and manufacturing explosives.
  • A student reported that they were planning an
    attack on the school.
  • Jackson, WY 4/22/99
  • 17-year-old student arrested when authorities
    found a metal device and a fuse in his backpack.

  • Jonesboro, AR 3/24/98
  • Two middle school students pull fire-alarm and
    then start shooting students while they flee the
    school.
  • Four students and a teacher were killed.

  • West Paducah, KY 12/1/97
  • 14-year-old freshman kills 3 classmates and
    injures 5 more.
  • Students were involved in a prayer group.
  • Allegedly got the idea from the movie The
    Basketball Diaries.

  • Moses Lake, WA 2/2/96
  • 14-year-old honor student killed two 15-year old
    students and his 49-year old teacher. He also
    kept his algebra class hostage.
  • Got the idea from a book by Stephen King called
    Rage.
  • He used the line This sure beats algebra class,
    doesnt it? a line from the book.

  • Establish school curriculum
  • Work on moral and ethical standards
  • Offer anger management programs
  • Increase security monitoring
  • Install metal detectors
  • Random locker searches

  • Educate school staff
  • Teach history of violence
  • Teach how to respond to violence

  • Enhance school atmosphere
  • Make students feel valued at school
  • Allow students to have input
  • Initiate a weapons hotline that pays students for
    reporting weapons
