School Violence
  • By
  • Nicole Jones and Jenna Morgan

2
Topics
  • Number of Deaths Due to School Related Violence
  • Causes of Violence in Schools
  • Some ways teachers, principals, parents and
    children can prevent violence

3
Hypothesis
  • With various prevention methods and knowing some
of the main causes of violence in schools,
everyone can help to decrease the amount of
    violence that occurs.

4
Number of Deaths
  • 20 of all public schools experienced some sort
of violent activity in the 1999-2000 school year,
such as rape, sexual assault, robbery, or
    aggravated assault.
  • In a nationwide survey of high school students
(CDC 2004) 33 reported being in a physical
fight one or more times in the 12 months
preceding the survey. 17 reported carrying a
weapon (e.g., gun, knife, or club) on one or more
of the 30 days preceding the survey.
  • A total of 365 deaths have occurred from school
    violence from July 1, 1992 to June 30, 2000
  • Contrary to public perception, violent crime in
schools has declined dramatically since 1994. The
annual rate of serious violent crime in 2003 (6
per 1,000 students) was less than half of the
    rate in 1994.

5
Homicides in Schools from 92-93 to 04-05
6
Causes
  • Among the students who committed a
school-associated homicide, 20 were known to
have been bullied and 12 were known to have
expressed suicidal thoughts or had engaged in
    suicidal behavior.
  • Substance use like alcohol or drugs, perpetration
of physical violence, and witnessing violence
were significantly correlated to weapon carrying
    in school.

    Video Games, and Videos)
