  • Santiago de Quarter City is the capital of the
    State of Querétaro. Querétaro is located about
    two and a half hours north of México City (125
    miles ), in a region called the Bajío. It is near
    San Miguel de Allende and Guanajuato, two major
    tourist attractions. Founded in 1531, it has been
    the capital of the country twice, in 1847 and
    again in 1916. In 1810 the first plans for
    independence were hatched at the Querétaros home
    of Josefa Ortiz de Domínguez (heroine of the
    independence movement) In1848 the
    Mexican-American War was concluded in the city
    with the signing of the Treaty of Guadalupe
    Hidalgo French emperor Maximilian was executed
    by firing squad on the Cerro de las Campanas
    (north of town) also in 1917 the Mexican
    Constitution, which is still in force, was signed
    in this city.
