• Post slavery America
• Landowners would have tenants that would work the
  land and be paid in crops
• They only worked on the land, they did not have
  any ownership
• Majority of the crops were kept by the land owner
  (i.e. 50 or more)
• Rest of crops were divided evenly between workers

• Series of state and local laws created in 1876
• Mandated segregation in all public facilities
• Inferior treatment and accommodations for
  African- Americans
• Justified with separate but equal
• Completely repealed in 1965 with Voting Rights Act

Plessy v. Ferguson

• On June 7, 1982, Homer Plessy (1/8 black and
  therefore an African American under Louisiana
  law and was also born a free man) boarded a train
• He boarded the white car of the train but was
  told to go to the colored section
• Ferguson was judge
• Creation of separate but equal
• First time federal law protected segregation

Brown v. Board of Education

• Case filed in 1951, decision in 1954
• Browns daughter had to go to a black school that
  was over a mile away.
• Part of the trip was a six block walk to her bus
  stop
• There was a white school only seven blocks away.
• Kansas did not require segregated schools and
  that is what Brown argued
• Overturned segregated schools (9-0), 1st victory
  against Jim Crow.

Connection to Fences

• Troys father was a sharecropper and worked to
  get cotton for Mr. Lupin, which shows why he had
  a zealous work ethic and cared only about the
  crops. By the 1950s, sharecropping was nearly
  nonexistent in America.
• Troy was discriminated against in sports, with
  negro leagues, and in work. Brown v Board was
  being filled about that time so in the coming
  years things would start to get better for Troy
  (i.e. driving the truck)
