4What is an Online Community?
- In 1996 a multidisciplinary group of academics
held a workshop at which they identified the
following core characteristics of online
communities (Whittaker, Issacs, O'Day, 1997, p.
137) - Members have a shared goal, interest, need, or
activity that provides the primary reason for
belonging to the community. - Members engage in repeated, active participation
and there are often intense interactions, strong
emotional ties and shared activities occurring
between participants
5What is an Online Community?
- Members have access to shared resources and there
are policies for determining access to those
resources. - Reciprocity of information, support and services
between members is important. - There is a shared context of social conventions,
language, and protocols

Communities Focusing on sociability and
usability. In J. Jacko A. Sears (Eds.),

11Steve Jones
- Sharing of information
- Not in the sense of the transmission of
information - It is the ritual sharing of information that
pulls it together
12James Carey
Communication under a transmission view is the
extension of messages across geography for the
purposes of control, the case under a ritual
view is the sacred ceremony that draws persons
together in fellowship and commonality. Carey,
J. W. (1992). Communication as Culture (Reprinted
ed.). New York London Routledge.Original
publication, 1989. P. 18.
