  • They are not in the water you drink or the air
    you breathe
  • Most of them have no taste

  • There are 13 vitamins and each one does
    something important for your body to stay healthy
  • You get them from the foods you eat, vitamin
    pills, or from enriched foods or dietary
    supplements

  • The cause of a disease called Scurvy was a
    mystery
  • Scientists searched for it in polluted water,
    rotted foods, in poisons, and they even looked
    for a survey germ.
  • The search had come to a dead end UNTIL.

How did we Discover Vitamin Deficiency Diseases?
  • It was discovered that Sailors suffered from a
    disease called SCURVY- gums bleed, teeth fall
    out, your skin bruises easily, and you can die
    from it
  • In 1740, Dr James Lind a Scottish ships doctor
    found that sailors who ate citrus fruits were
    cured of their scurvy. If there is no Vitamin C
    in your diet you could get Scurvy.

The Scientific Discovery of Vitamins A and B
  • In 1913 scientists discovered chemical substances
    they called vitamins
  • The first ones were called Vitamin A and Vitamin
    B
  • In 1928 a white powder was extracted from
    oranges and cabbages.
  • It was discovered this powder cured scurvy. It is
    was named ascorbic acid. It come from the Greek
    word meaning no scurvy
  • Now we call ascorbic acid Vitamin C
